Do I need to declare income for UK tax?

Postby Francis-udon » March 30, 2011, 2:14 pm

Does anyone know if UK nationals living overseas and working for foreign companies are required to declare income to the hmrc?

I'm part owner of a company in Thailand and pay all relevant taxes within Thailand, however I was wondering if taxes have to be paid in the UK also. Some of my income is paid into my Thai bank and some to my UK bank. I'm worried that if I don't declare income to the UK authorities I may be hit with a bill in the future.

Francis, my understanding is that if you are still "UK Resident for tax purposes" then you should declare the income, though you shouldn't have to pay tax twice on the same money. If you are "Non-Resident for UK tax purposes" and the income was "earned" overseas (not in the UK) then you need not declare it.

Have you researched the HMRC website:
