Do you like Centara hotel in Udon ?

Had the breakfast buffet this morning. Got the grand tour from one of the staff. CH has a brunch on Saturdays and Sundays 0600-1430, which is something new. Weekdays have the usual breakfast and lunch buffets, 0600-1030 and 1130-1430. The gym is open, 0600-2100, but not the spa nor the pool. Room rate 1700 baht internet and 1950 baht walk-in. They were still laying carpet in some of the upper floor hallways. No carpeting in the rooms, which is an improvement.

Sorry trubrit...missed that the first time around since you said it was catering, and the print was too small to read without blowing up the picture.

Went by and had brunch today around 11:15. We were the first there as far as I could tell. Food was artfully arranged and plenty of variety. The only breakfast part of brunch I saw was an omelet station. My wife said that the bread was also breakfast for Thai people, and there was a wide variety of bread. ;)

I had a salad (nice ingredients including salami, ham, smoked chicken, etc.), sashimi and sushi, and a small helping of potato salad to start, with warm whole grain bread. (would suggest labeling the salad dressings as all but the oil & vinegar and thousand island look pretty much the same)

I then had lamb ribs (they called them chops), and they were quite good, if a bit underwhelming in the meat on them. About 1-2 bites per, so 3 was not enough. I also had potatoes and broccoli with the ribs. Other selections looked quite good also.

There is also a wide variety of Thai food, which my wife enjoyed. Many types of curry, noodles, rice, etc. She ate a lot and said it was all good, so it must have been good as she normally picks at things she does not enjoy.

The desserts are quite pretty, and well arranged. The desserts include ice cream and accoutrements...whipped cream, fudge sauce, chocolate chips, sliced almonds, etc., many types of cake, something that was like an egg custard with a creme broulee topping, and a wide variety of Thai desserts. The cakes are ~2 bites each, so you can experiment and find what you like.

All in all it was worth the $$ spent in my opinion. Total bill for the two of us was something like 750 baht with the 25% discount. We will go back.

Thanks for your report KB, glad you both enjoyed the lunch.I would have thought that 1,000bht as it would normally be without the opening offer a touch expensive though.Especially as the poster say's 415 less 25% which in my book would make it 675b. Did it include the ++?

Pulled out the receipt to look:

2 Buffet Brunch - 830.00 baht (415 baht each)
25% Discount - 207.50 (103.75 each)
(Subtotal - 622.50, 311.25 each)
10% Service charge (notice it is on the full amount, not the discount amount) - 83.00
7% VAT (again, on the full amount) - 49.39
Total: 754.89 baht

Parenthesis are things I added.

Not inexpensive, granted, but not outrageous either for the quality of food you get. And no, I did not tip. ;) I am not sure what the 10% 'service charge' is for, or why they charge it, but the wait staff certainly were not worth the charge. The cooks were friendly and spoke English, so maybe it was for them. :)

Thanks for the breakdown KB. I would have thought the 25% off should have applied to the ++ as well . Certainly VAT is charged only on the nett , discounted amount normally. :-"

Yesterday we were invited by Centara Hotel management to sample their buffet and tour the hotel. I took a few snaps for the benefit of those that haven't been yet.

The food IMO was very good quality, the only problem is I didn't have enough room in my stomach to try everything. The restaurant is nicely laid out and food is nicely presented.

We had a look around the gym and yoga room, apparently they spent over 25 million exercise machines and fitness area alone. If you're into keeping fit then this place is certainly worth a look. The pool isn't open yet but won't be too long before it's complete.

The fitness room has long-term membership fees so I would guess that's open to non-residents. I'm not sure about the pool when that opens, I'll see if I can find out for you.

The pool is scheduled to open in April 2012. Membership to the gym is 15,000 baht per year. The Spa is yet to open.

Yes I understood the gym annual membership does include use of the pool and spa when open . I was more interested if they did a casual ie: daily admission as I don't get into town often enough to justify annual membership. Under the old owner I used to take the kids swimming whilst the wife was shopping next door, quite convenient really .
