Do you like Centara hotel in Udon ?

Postby Alex » May 22, 2009, 10:43 am

Hi !

Do you like this hotel : Centara Hotel & Convention Centre, (formerly Charoensri Grand Royal Hotel) ?
Big bedroom, clean and modern bathroom, real breakfast buffet, internet, smile at the lobby...
Don't laugh, it's not so frequent !
Thx.

Hopefully now Centara (part of Central group) have taken over this hotel they will spend some money refurbishing it.We first stayed there in 2004 and it was looking a bit tired then.Nothing seems to have changed since then although, admittedly, its about 3 months since we were last in there.
Its in the best location in town and Udon is crying out for a really top class hotel so lets hope it gets updated soon.
At the moment better options are...
Irish Clock,850 baht including breakfast.
Charoen Botanical (New wing,at the back of the Charoen Hotel) 900 baht, swimming pool, nightclub etc.

Stopped at the Centra 3 nights ago, the place is getting tired, but still the best value for money in the 'Big' hotels in Udon that I have stopped at, at least you can use the swimming pool without catching some disease.

Some tidy looking bints in reception, some tidy ones in the restauraunt aswell.

Would agree with Zidane's summation. Chareon & Clock probably better value for money as it is.
With money spent on the rooms then could be worth what they charge. If 'money is no object' then the junior suites are very nice & certainly the sort of room(s) you could relax in for quite a while.
Breakfast is well worth the effort of coming down to have, especially if you have something cooked then & there by the chefs.

No not to stay, but sometimes pop by for their buffet lunch as it is a nice selection. :D
Up to 3 years ago (when I moved here) I used to stay regularly, & it was in need of basic clean up in the rooms. Things like damaged carpets and furniture never seemed to get fixed & so gradually got worse & worse. Plus, having carpets is a bit of a two edged sword. Nice to walk on & looks good when new, but does hold dust & smells (especially smoke). Because they are tiled & not carpeted very low cost places (like Top Mansion & Ruy Suk) can actually look & seem very much cleaner than somewhere like Centara.
My feeling is that if they had a major upgrading of the rooms, but held the prices (probably banned smoking in most as well) then it could be a real asset both for the owner & Udon Thani, but, as it is, is probably a little expensive for what you are getting.

Really difficult to find a good hotel in this area.
I've tried in Nong Khai. Royal Mekong is very old and breakfast very short. Grand Hotel is a hovel. I've thrown a look in some guest, but I didn't find a comfortable place.
I'm not looking for a price, but for a perfectly clean and nice bedroom, a modern bathroom with hot water but no cockroach, in a hotel where the customers don't slam doors the whole night, talking loudly in the corridor. And I want a good breakfast buffet, with choice and hot food, and if possible drink a tea that is not brown water...
I know I'm pretty difficult !

I think The President would satisfy most of your requirements as far as the room is concerned.
I am not sure about the food front as I have never eaten there & have heard good & bad reports on it.

Although small The Clock is probably as near as you will get in town centre. Only a few, largish, rooms, on a couple of floors, so very unlucky if noisy at night(The Clock itself shuts at 10 pm). They don't do a breakfast buffet as such but will fresh cook a full breakfast or just about anything on toast (or, I believe, a Thai alternative). Have never had tea there, but the coffee is excellent.

Was in Grand Charoen courtesy of TAT last December (PAD sitin) for a few days. Lunch, dinner were both pretty good (sometimes buffet choice a bit limited if late); breakfast big variety, fruits and stuff, but bacon poor, just bits of streaky stuff, and if given choice, would go Irish Clock for Breakfast.

Room old but ok, but no internet in room I had. Very quiet at night. if wealthy, would consider but like flying, economy accomodation does the job and better value for money.

Having never stayed at the president i cannot comment, however I always stayed at the ban chiang whenever I came until I moved here, not central true, but food excellent, swimming pool good, all services and room very good, a touch pricy but then you get what you pay for, no disturbance from other guests at all. All in all the best, The Charoeon new wing is also very good not so expensive but good, although the food can leave something to be desired.
I did stay at the Charoensi now centara once NEVER again for all the reasons given above by other postees

Hi all-Looking at staying at Centara next month for a week or so.I have tried in vain to get some response from both Aussie Bar and The Irish clock for two years in a row now,re booking a room-I have now given up as they are obviously so popular they don't need my business-Thats too bad,as I have heard the clock especially is a nice place-I have had mates stay many times before.
So back to the Centara-Being a single guy I occassionally end up meeting an lady or two on my travels-If this was to occur, dose anyone know the situation re extra "Joiner" fees at this Hotel ?I don't want to have the BS that some Hotels try on (even though I have booked and paid for 2 adults!)
I don't need a lecture from anyone re sex tourism etc, I'm up in Udon on business and may not even need to invite a guest back to my room.It would be nice to know though how their policy stands re this.I'd rather not ask them directly,as this could be misconstrude and assumptions made.-Cheers-Micky
