Dog Ticks

Postby Chriss » September 28, 2011, 11:05 am

Has anyone got a sure tried and tested remedy (spray, powder etc) for tick and seed tick removal from dogs? We usually find one or two ticks a month on each dog but a good shower with flea and tick shampoo and all is Ok again, but for some reason this year there seems to be far more than a few. One dog had 9 bloated ticks taking a ride a few days back.
Went to a vet and she gave us some product called Latick to spread on the dogs skin around the shoulders but this has been pretty ineffectual.
What about prevention, any ideas?
I also want to find something to clear the house just in case the buggers are hiding out somewhere, when I was in the US there was a product locally known as a bomb, you set it off left the room closed up for a hour, I think, and it cleared anything in its path. Anyone seen anything similar in Udon?

By far this is the worst year we've seen for ticks as well. We have two dogs that stay outside in the day, inside at night after a bath. Despite using the lotion behind the neck (once every two months) and a wash with flea/tick shampoo, the little buggers still cling on and climb out walls after the dogs come inside. Only a few and easy to spot and the dogs stay in one room of the house only, but we never had this problem in years past. I spoke with our vet yesterday about it.....he blamed the rain.

Back in the states we used Avon Skin So Soft for lots of different bug related problems. Don't know if it is available here or if it would be effective.

Here is the recipe:

Also, here is good link for all sorts of pet remedies and care.

Agree, it's the worst year for ticks, millions of them.

I now use Frontline, expensive but very effective. No ticks and fleas anymore, unfortunately one dosis only lasts five weeks.

I know in Europe fleas and ticks have become resistent to Frontline, but here apparently not yet.

Succes !

Peterp, Where do you buy Frontline?, I've been Googling and found this product on various websites? The product we were given Latick is used the same as Frontline, but as I say not very effective.

Agree. Frontline works.
Here in the west we get it in pharmacies or pet shops.
Perhaps Boots in the mall has it, or can order ?

Dog Ticks

Admittedly, my dogs, one still recovering from 'meeting' a car, are not presently allowed out much onto the long grass, or playing with other dogs. They seem tick-free, having had inexpensive, preventative injections at the vet, although no idea exactly what.

Don't know the name product, but I get it from my vet. I tell her my dog's weight and she gives me a syringe with the appropriate dosage. The meds last about 6-8 weeks and does an excellent job of keeping ticks off the dog. The cost depends on the weight of the dog. I pay 150bt for my 40K dog.

I don't think, IMO, there is anything that will prevent ticks clinging to animals. The injection the vet gives them, i think every year, wife buys the stuff and injects the dog with it, cheap charlie, only prevents the animals getting a illness from the tick bites.
We've tried quite a few things. Including tick collars, Without success. The only one that seems to work is the wife checking the dogs every day and removing the blighters. Reminds me when i was in Africa. When i used to play golf, my game was poor, i ended up mostly of the fairway. Like a fool i wore shorts. My legs always had a number of ticks on them at the end of the game. Used to use a lighted cigarette end to get them of, otherwise you would leave the head in. The ticks here don't seem as bad as in Africa, where they are at least two or three times the size of the ones here.
I do agree this has been a bad year. I put it down to the weather.
Cheers Doug.

Went to the vets by the airport today, they gave us some meds in syringes to inject the mutts with and I bought some flea/tick collars, we also bought some liquid to dilute to clean the floor round the dogs beds. The beds hit the washing machine today.
Trying to cover all the bases, the hardest thing is keeping the dogs off the grass behind the house. Took me ages to get them to use this area and stop crapping on the drive, now I'd prefer them to, they look at me like I'm crazy......Hey ho the joys of owning pets.

Chriss, I bought Frontline from the vet in Kumpawapi and the animal hospital in KK. I cannot imagine you can't get it from vets in Udon.

Collars are not very effective, at least that's what I hear. It's cheaper though.

See if your remedy works, you always can revert to something 'stronger' like frontline.

Keep us updated.

Your entitled to your opinion, but in my experience your wrong. It make take a few days, usually 2-3 days after injecting my dog and he's cleared of any ticks. About 6-8 weeks later when the meds wear off and ticks appear on the dog then I know it's time for another shot.

Forget the product name, I'm sure the vet told me once and I believe she told me it was from Germany.

Could you please provide the location of the vet.....udonmap grid would be fine. Thanks

I don't use collars, powders, collars ,sprays or oils that contain chemicals to poison the critters because I am afraid that I am poisoning my precious!
The ticks are very bad this year for some reason.I take my dog outside to some particular grassy areas that she like to do her business in.As soon as I get home my expert tick finder(my daughter) does a thorough body check on her and she always finds at least 2,but usually 6-20 ticks!
We ''stun'' them with acetone or rubbing alcohol on a Q-Tip,causing them to let go,then take them off her with tweezers!I keep her hair short and give her at least 2 baths a week.
In America we use food grade Diatomaceous Earth which can be bought a pet supply stores. This kills the critters from the inside by6 absorbing the moisture out of their body,no poisonous chemicals.I can't find it here, but it is completely safe for the animals!

Yep

very bad year for fleas and ticks. Our poor old mutt was always covered in them and they were venturing into the house as well. Our neighbours were over one day and we had three people working on the poor fella. They mentioned that a guy from the village could give anti flea / tick jabs so we sussed him out. He came to the house and gave him a jab for a grand total of 40 Baht. After a few days he is one happy mutt. Still sweeping out of the house despite Baygon surface spray but the jab works a treat. Lasts for 6 months.

He also mentioned they jab the local cattle also but said they cannot be sold for 6 months as it is very strong. Don't know what its called though
