Don't take this seriously

Postby parrot » January 4, 2010, 6:14 pm

At the risk of inciting a local riot, I thought some people might enjoy this article, in the New York Times.
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/03/books ... yer-t.html
Probably not a word of it is true. And I'm certainly not promoting one side or the other in mentioning the article. Enjoy!

You're right parrot, not all of it's true.

Some of us Americans cringed not when Bush was re-elected, but when Obama was elected.

Apart from that, I'd say it's a fairly accurate piece.

Frankly, I'm much more interested in what Chinese, Japanese, Germans and Russians think about America than these folks.

Agree with most of that, Texpat, but I don't gain or lose any self-esteem or sleep based on what others think of the US -- especially when those thoughts are based on an isolated experience.

As a Brit, i used to be proud of the country, i can't remember when mind you, but i'm certainly not now. I loathe the place, especially after 12 years of New Labour, all spin no substance. Now hopelessly politically correct, failing medical services, education standards falling, unchecked imigration, anti social behaviour everywhere. On a talk radio station today, the presenters calling the new airport scanning scheme rascist unless a white granny can be treated like a Bin Laden lookalike, fishing is a vile blood sport, social payments to be protected no matter how people in work suffer. Help!

I was never envious of the US in the past, but i am now. My nephew has married a US girl and now lives in Columbus, Ohio, and loving it! The pride Americans have in their country and the way their give the world most of its movie/tv entertainment and music too is indeed something to be proud of. The way their business arm is so predominant in the world. Our supermarket must be 50% stars and stripes owned products! Then the vast array of places to visit in the US is endless, unlike little Britain.

Where i work on the London Underground, Americans often are loud, but not rude or anything. The staff certainly don't dislike American tourists that's for sure. So i think the ordinary Brit respects the States, no problem! :D

Very interesting article which, in the main , reflects my general views. It should be taken in context however with the size of the US. The name itself gives a clue , United States of America .Some of those states are bigger than the entire British Isles, so it would be an over simplification to generalise about the average American, even more so than it would an average Brit. Not only are there vast geographical variations, but , as now in Britain, they are from virtually every nationality. Which in itself has led to a general diversity in the people of both .There is no longer a typical American person, as there is no such thing as an average Brit anymore .Look at it a bit closer to home here in Udon . There are many of us from both living here . Who would you select from either as being the archetypal representative? You couldn't , we are all different from each other regardless of country of origin .It would be utterly stupid of anyone to castigate an entire nations population because we have come across one individual whose manners or whatever, we didn't like .
No , generalise all you like. I will still choose my friends by their own actions, not the country they happen to come from .But there is a lesson in this for us all . No man is an island, his actions and behaviour will be seen by some, as those of a person of his origin, whether its nationality or race, and accordingly his fellow men will be judged .

This thread is too funny. :D
Sit in any Isaan bar for ten minutes and listen to the dialogue. Say nothing.

The usual result is some ***** know-it-all trying to tell an American (or other) how the world works. And why their government, food, beer, sports, women, genetics are superior.

Fascinating. Simply fascinating. Especially considering they can't get much of anything right.

Well said, Trubrit!

As the old dinosaurs from the "Southern values", pre-Civil Rights, and pro American hegemony days die off, America is becoming a better place and the world will be better for it. IMHO, it is true that most Americans are globally ignorant, ethnocentric, and egocentric. It shows when they go abroad and in the way they deal with conflict and diversity. Even when they post on this thread.

My avatar is trying to change it (see Nobel Peace Prize reasons), but he has to muddle through and is being severely hampered by the aforementioned at almost every turn - thus has to compromise to get anything substantive done. Including play the scapegoat for Republicans' stupidity. Love it, hate it, or leave it, that is the the way it was designed to work.

Cheers!

I just vomited a little. What a silly goat.

Britons are only slightly more tolerable than American liberals.

Britain and Europe LOVED O'Bummer. Need I say more?

Nope. You probably said too much already :D

But hey - what a poor place the world (and this forum) would be without the "input" of conservative, right wing pundits. More power to Fox News, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin et al, and their sycophantic followers

Seems you're talking out your Oz hole. Do you even have a dog in this fight or are you a (likely) import (refugee)?

You don't have to answer that.

You rarely warrant an answer - even as a refugee yourself :D
