DVD problems

Postby BKKSTAN » July 21, 2008, 1:37 pm

I usually buy 6 DVDs from a regular vendor, at the NM,once a month.Once in awhile I have problems with them and take the bad ones back my next trip where I am there after6 pm when they open and I have had no problem with replacing them or exchanging them if there is not a good copy!

Last month,I went to check on new DVDs and he handed me 10,saying''all new ones'',I was in a hurry and selected 6 of interest!

When I got home,I kept getting "disc error'' on 4 of them, the 5th one started breaking up and finally froze about 2/3 of the way through!
The 6th one played with no difficulty, the only problem was that I had already bought a copy 2-3 months earlier and didn't recognize the title when I hurried in my choosing!  The fact that it played and the other don't,leads me to believe that maybe the latest discs they are using are bad and it is not my disc player!

Anybody having the same problems or have any info that would help?

As Ron says, VLC is the media player of choice for those who download movies from the internet as it will indeed play just about everything and its free!

As for your other problems Stan it could be any of a multitude of issues but my guess is you just got really unlucky and got a dodgy batch. I have bought many a DVD that did the things you describe. You pays you money, you takes your chance.

Lastly I would advise that when you all see Batman, Dark Knight on the stalls next week or any other recent release, don't waste your money. It will be a copy of some guy sitting in Cinema with a camcorder recording the film from the big screen. You will have crap audio and visual and will even get the added bonus of seeing the guy a few rows in front getting up to purchase his popcorn!

Wait awhile and get the full experience, not a blurred, mumbled mish mash.

An alternative to VLC (but not necessarily a substitute) which also has good reviews is GOM.

It has a better interface than VLC, and I am using it as my media player of choice, with VLC as a backup.

Stan, I believe I use the same source for my DVD's (heavy-set guy in back of NM, speaks good English). The problems you describe are very similar to the problems I've run into when I'm in a hurry and don't check things out before buying.

To address your problem: the 'Disc error' problems are possibly because the discs were copied from a 'region 1' disc (made for US use) and your DVD player may not be able to play these. I have a recently purchased Samsung Home Theater and it WILL NOT play region 1 discs, they play just fine on my PC though. I've gotten a couple of these from our man at NM and he's always exchanged for me. Sounds like your 5th disc is just bad and he should replace it as well.

If your DVD player is locked to a regional code, you may find a hack here which will make it region-free. Often done by pressing a sequence of buttons on the remote.

Jackspratt, I wish to say THANK YOU !! The information you posted worked just great. I have many DVD's which I brought with me when I came from the States and have been limited to playing them on my Mac only. NOW THEY PLAY JUST FINE ON MY HOME THEATER, I truly appreciate the information.

Once more, the value of udonmap forum proves itself.
