Education Fare 24th-26th December

Postby trubrit » December 21, 2010, 9:22 am

Some may have seen my heads up in the accommodation forum regarding the arrival of some 20,000 teachers from all around Issan for this event.Well talking to some of the organisers it seems my estimate of numbers coming may be a serious under estimate. The last time this event was held in Ubon it apparently attracted over 100,000. I am told , not only was there no accommodation available, with every school in the area taking at least 500 people , but even worse , as far as Thais are concerned there was no where to eat, with every noodle stall and similar establishments being packed out .. I was talking to a teacher at my son's school and they are preparing to accommodate 10 big bus loads .So there ,is likely to be serious road congestion as well, all round town .Most delegates seem to be travelling overnight on the 23rd .
Now I must admit I have never been to one of these gatherings so all the above is based on what I have been told, but it would seem if only partly correct, Udon is a place to avoid over Christmas .

Could that be the reason that no teachers are showing up for my daughters M-6 classes?

Although the event doesn't officially start until Friday it could be that her school are preparing a project for it , so yes, possibly Stan .

I notice some kind moderator altered my topic title to read fair instead of fare which I originally used .This was not a spelling mistake. I used fare as in the meaning of a menu. It is not a fair in the accepted meaning of the word as that implies a market type operation where goods are for sale. As far as I am aware that doesn't apply in this case . This is , if held in one place, more an exhibition, but as its spread over so many outlets I was reluctant to use this description . Perhaps I should explain . The purpose of the event is to give a showcase to many varied education establishments to show the many types of projects they are working on and to encourage those schools away from the mainstream to develop their own programmes . It is not a seminar and in no way seeks to influence other schools . That is the beauty and obviously the attraction of the event. It simply says, this is what we are doing, what about you? It is , if you like, a gathering of teachers from all around the region comparing notes and learning in the process .Now that can't be a bad thing, can it?

Hi Trubit, you got the main message across, that being traffic could be horrendous, as i'll be going into town on them days thanks for the warning.
As to the altering of the title of your thread i would say that FAIR is the correct word to use in this context, i used to go to exhibitions and they are fairs to be fair, no pun intended

Wouldn't even try Stan. Your mind is obviously a closed book on many aspects of living in Thailand .

It is always open to learning, but your right, the argument would have to have legs.My experiences are pretty clear anf fresh.I know that their are people that have sincere interest and desire to make a difference as teachers, but,IMO,the system is not so designed to allow it!

It wouldn't surprise to find many of the teachers involved in setting up and attending, are the ones missing from the classrooms!

Students? What is their importance in this project?

Just a quick heads up. Many Atm's in town have run out of money, some are restricting withdrawals to 500bht and most have long queues and yes it's still early. Maybe they will top up later .

Heads up!

Parts of Posri Road and Srisuk Road will be one way for the weekend. The major events will be held at Thungsi Muang so traffic in that area will be extremely congested.

On my walk around Nong Prajak Park this morning I noticed a line of minivans parked on the street at Prajaktra Hotel. I've been told there are no empty hotel rooms in town, as the influx of people have them all rented.

I'm glad I thought about stocking up on cash yesterday.

A good weekend for home food.

Okay an update on places that may concern Forumites . First the road outside the airport is totally gridlocked so if your catching a plane over the weekend leave plenty of time . The worst area is around Tungsri muang, many streets are closed and a lot of right or left turns are forbidden, which is adding to the congestion. I have just had a report that the Laos bridge is also having congestion problems . So if you don't have to travel in the next two days, best not to .Me? I am opening a bottle of festive '"spirit "and sitting in the garden . \:D/ Merry Xmas all. :D

I was at the airport at about 10.20am, and while it was busy on the road outside, getting in and out was relatively simple. The ring road between the airport to Carefour, and then back to the Nong Khai road, was very busy with both coaches and mini-buses.

I also stop for fuel at the PTT on the Nong Khai road, and it was crowded, and bustling - I even commented to Mrs spratt that it reminded me of the pre-Christmas rush back in Oz.
