I am always one for solar..My NZ house has been on solar for 16yrs now. Initial outlay $3000 there abouts..Coxo is right is some ways re costs, but it depends what you want to power..My new Aussie new laws have a $90,000 solar system, which is overkill, particularly when they use the power they make to sell to the Power Company just so they have no bills, but when the power company power goes off, theirs does too..seems to defeat the whole purpose of having solar in my eyes, but each to his own..
I prefer the stand alone system, the self sufficient system because I am on an island with no Power Company, its all solar. About 1000 homes each with its own special little solar system depending on how deep your pockets were, and what your power needs are..I get by on a 12 Volt system, two 70w panels and one truck battery..its not the Ritz but I have a generator for washing machine, vacum cleaner and power tools..
now to the nexus of the thread. Go solar, even if you have a 50/50 system, half solar, half national grid..you can get an Aussie made 3000w pure sinewave inverter which will convert to 230volts, with a 70Amp built in battery charger online for $789Aus.( less if you are using a lower voltage equipment) you add 3 truck size 108ah batteries to this, and three 90w solar panels, and that will run your whole house, and only cost you $5000 all up if you do the wiring yourself..its things like freezers, vacum cleaners, hair dryers, toasters that really use alot of start up power, but as I have said, you might just want to think about running the music,tv, lights and computer off solar, or a variation of this, and run the rest off the power company. certainly solar water heating in thailand is a go..gas fridge and stove maybe. hell me and my boy use to cook over an open fire in the pouring rain..its was actually fun, and gave him some life skills that did him proud in the army..anyway my vote, solar.
