Electricity for new house?

Postby JR » January 10, 2012, 4:20 pm

We are thinking about building a house on land well away from town. No neighbours and no electricity of course. Nearest main road 1km away. Asked the electricity company. They said, yes we can set up a power line 1 km to the land. If you give us half a million Baht! Thanks, I think I pass.

Sounds like the perfect opportunity at looking at going self sufficient on electricity... :D

Maybe something on this site to interest you.....

Combined with solar water heating & maybe solar power in the day....

Electricity for new house?

Postby rjj04 » January 10, 2012, 5:04 pm

TGF told me before that the government might pay for (some if not all) the cost of installing solar panels in homes far away from utility poles. Why don't you check on that. The price of solar panels in the USA now is about to break below $1/watt (about $1.04/watt now). If Amorn solar panels are the only panels here, the last I looked they are priced far about that... maybe $4-5/watt. :( Not sure where to inquire, but at least it is worth asking somebody in the Thai local government about a solar subsidy.

What about putting in the poles and power lines yourself (local electrician) and getting the electricity company to install meter where you connect to main power line, just athought.

The solar panel manufacturing industry in Europe has been decimated by the Chinese over the last year.
The price of panels has slumped...

Just for hot water though this would make a good read...

Electricity for new house?

If you are running the power through your own land install underground power yourself, you will need one pole for the PEA meter on or close to your land, there may be one there already, then go underground direct to the distribution board in your house. Global House has the double insulated cable for underground use, you will need a decent size square metre cable for that distance with NO joins at all but its all available in Udon, even 500 met but you may have to order from BKK, I did this method at my house myself, got the family to dig the trench and laid the cable, very easy and not expensive but must go in before foundation and slab work for the house has started.

Sloar power is a good alternative but a system to run a house with all appliances, ie fridge, washing machine, TV, stereo, AC etc is expensive, you need a lot of batteries and a back up generator. A complete system in Aus a few years ago cost about $25,000AUD. The batteries life span was about 7 years then they had to be replaced, quite expensive.

If you need a hand with anything PM me, I have built a three houses in Udon doing this method and been building in Phuket for sixteen years, I can ask the electricians at work to calculate the size of cable required if needed.

Electricity for new house?

Postby maaka » January 11, 2012, 1:49 pm

I am always one for solar..My NZ house has been on solar for 16yrs now. Initial outlay $3000 there abouts..Coxo is right is some ways re costs, but it depends what you want to power..My new Aussie new laws have a $90,000 solar system, which is overkill, particularly when they use the power they make to sell to the Power Company just so they have no bills, but when the power company power goes off, theirs does too..seems to defeat the whole purpose of having solar in my eyes, but each to his own..
I prefer the stand alone system, the self sufficient system because I am on an island with no Power Company, its all solar. About 1000 homes each with its own special little solar system depending on how deep your pockets were, and what your power needs are..I get by on a 12 Volt system, two 70w panels and one truck battery..its not the Ritz but I have a generator for washing machine, vacum cleaner and power tools..

now to the nexus of the thread. Go solar, even if you have a 50/50 system, half solar, half national grid..you can get an Aussie made 3000w pure sinewave inverter which will convert to 230volts, with a 70Amp built in battery charger online for $789Aus.( less if you are using a lower voltage equipment) you add 3 truck size 108ah batteries to this, and three 90w solar panels, and that will run your whole house, and only cost you $5000 all up if you do the wiring yourself..its things like freezers, vacum cleaners, hair dryers, toasters that really use alot of start up power, but as I have said, you might just want to think about running the music,tv, lights and computer off solar, or a variation of this, and run the rest off the power company. certainly solar water heating in thailand is a go..gas fridge and stove maybe. hell me and my boy use to cook over an open fire in the pouring rain..its was actually fun, and gave him some life skills that did him proud in the army..anyway my vote, solar.

Electricity for new house?

Postby douglas » January 11, 2012, 4:50 pm

Hi,
Just been to Big C by the flyover. The shop on the ground floor, that seem to sell everything, had solar panels in today. All sizes, did not look to closely as i was not buying. Might be worth a visit to check on the prices. The prices and rating was on them. 12V and 24V ones.
Cheers Doug.

Half a Million for 1 KM???? We have the M&B hotel here in Bandung who (3 years ago) had to bring in their own 3 phase power 2.2KV over 1.5 Km with a step down transformer at the end and they paid less than 250K Baht, all done by the power authority!

But, this is by far the best suggestion here and has been done around my location a number of times. Biggest hassle you may have is if the poles need to be raised on private land. On the positive side is if someone want's to tap in they pay you a percentage of the installation costs.

Yep, that similar to what we would need. And 250K I would take. But not 500. That would be some 300K expanding someones bank account (not the electric company)
