Englishman's Retreat - Hard to find...

Postby Glyn » October 25, 2007, 11:33 am

Apparently people are turning up at the Englishman's Retreat, but they are unsure if they have arrived so go away again.

It might seem strange but the Englishman's Retreat has no signs neither on the way or when you're right outside. It does however have a castle style wall, a draw-bridge (immitation only) and a castle gate. So when you see these 3 things you know you've arrived. To enter walk over the bridge onto the small courtyard and ring the bell at the right-side door.

We look forward to seeing you

So just curious as to why you don't have signs Glyn. ?

it sounds great though...'Look for the draw bridge and Castle Wall, walk over the bridge into the courtyard and ring a bell'. Do you enter another world when you are in there.? :)

Yes BM, you do enter something different at the Englishman's Retreat.

I at the second time of trying, found this place, it was however, worth the effort, there is a well stocked bar, the prices, must be amongst the cheapest in Udon.

They have a little bit of a limited menu at present, but the menu does state, that it is a temporary menu, I had the all day English Breakfast, at a cost of 99 baht, I certainly found it to be value for money,it was well presented, plenty of it, and well cooked!

Glyn & On, were very hospitable, and took the bother to show us around,
every where we went, was spotless.

The rooms are very well presented and value for the rates charged.

I would say that this is the place to go with the Thai Wife or Girlfriend, and family, and I can see it becoming the "In Place".

Decent atmospere, decent food, decently priced drinks, decent gym, decent [if a little small] pool, and lastly a decent host, what more do you want!!!!

Best of luck on your new venture Glyn & On, see you soon =D> =D>

So overall it was pretty decent then Ralph? As I'm Irish can I get in or will I be shot at with arrows by ye olde castle guards and have boiling oil poured over me?

You'll be right - Glyn is Welsh! I'm a Jones so I'm part Welsh, but born in England and now an Aussie citizen. At least a third of me can get in! I had a look at the place early this year when it was being built, and recently looked again just prior to opening. I'll try to load a pic of the fron t of it that I took.
Cheers

It wasn't quite completed when I took that - about 5 or 6 weeks ago, buyt it is now. I think I'll give staying there a go as it looks ok to me and prices are good. Plus brand new slate pool table and a decently priced bar and car rental, plus gym and swimming pool. Now Glyn, do I get a discount? Commission? Free beer?

Best of luck with it mate! Hope it goes well. I'll be up there for a few cold ones as soon as I get back to Udon.

Cheers

Tomorrow night would be a good time to visit, the big grudge match between ER and the Aussie Pub in the pool league is being played, so there will be a few of us reprobates loitering around.
Hope to see you there.

Alright Glyn,

I'm good thanks

I will be descending on Udon Thani in April when my job ends in March. (Not confirmed and if I get an extension then I'll be visiting just for 20 days)

I'm from Caerphilly but family all originally from Cathays. I currently live in Rhiwbina.

I'll definately pop in during my stay in Udon. Looks a great place. :D

ADSL and wirless is now installed at The Englishman's Retreat. We have a good signal in all 9 rooms, so bring those lappies and happy surfing.

Out of Interest, Glyn.

Why as a Welshman did you name the hotel 'An Englishman's Retreat'?

Seem's a strange choice of name. :?

Great looking hotel but surely 'Caerphilly Castle Pt2' would of been better, butty? :D
