ESET v Security Essentials

I wondered if anyone has any views here as I am a caveman.
I currently use ESET NOD32 and have been happy with it. It is time to renew and have called my people who installed the programme but they advised to forget about ESET and install the Microsoft Security Essentials anti-virus programme.
I'm not overly keen to dump ESET for Microsoft, does anyone have any preferences?

I've been using Avast for 5 or so years. No viruses, updates a few times per day, free, doesn't bog down the computer.

I've heard good things about MSE, but at this point, I can't think of a good reason to change.

If using Avast one should update, I am not sure what number I am on but it is I think avast 7 or more

That was my next question and you're spot on, but it DOES apply to me. I've had the XP programme for 5 years having had it set up by a legitimate team responsible for the fleet I was working in at the time. However 3 years ago the "Microsoft Genuine Advantage" raised it's head claiming my XP was pirated. I questioned the team and they laughed and said it was obviously one of the 22% "false positives". I have since ignored the "reminders" everytime I open Word or Excel, but with your information I won't pursue MSE and stick with ESET.

I use ESET NOD32 which I find fine and wish to continue using. I note I also get almost frequent updates to "Windows Defender", which am I correct in thinking is Microsoft's Firewall and/or AV programme? Can anyone confirm that my understanding is correct, and also if I really need to bother allowing the almost daily "Definition Updates to Window's Defender", and which all use up hard disk space, or whether I can turn that off and leave the ESET NOD 32 Security Suite to do the job alone.

You dont need defender, shut if off. Eset Nod 32 is recognised as one of the best out there. Stick with it

i've been using mse for about 3 months now.I think it's king.

To be clear is Windows Defender the same as MSE or part of MSE, or neither?

I seemed to have Windows Defender turned on and receiving updates, but it/I had never carried out a scan or intercepted anything. Whereas with NOD 32 I carry out regular scans and get the odd warning and interception, which I have never got from Windows Defender. I'm not even sure how the latter came to be installed/set up and activated. To my knowledge, it hadn't asked me!!

When Microsoft updates it installed it Arjay. Like yourself it has never caught anything even when i used to run it for extra security. I have eset on my work Laptop, which im on now and Norton 2009 with firewall on my personal laptop. Eset is better, not a doubt about it well imho!

As far as i know defender is not part of MSE. Hope this helps.

I think defender is just on there in case you decide you dont want an antivirus or something, which of course is a crazy decision. You can work that out for yourself when you see all the security updates from Microsoft!
