UEFA Champions League 2009/10

Postby Zidane » August 28, 2009, 8:42 am

The draw for the group stages was made yesterday.
I think Arsenal have the easiest group and United the toughest.
Liverpool and Chelsea have reasonable groups.
Rangers, too, have a chance of second in their group.
Hopefully they can all progress to the next stage.

Last nights results include.....
Liverpool 1 Debrecen 0......Dirk Kuyt spared Liverpools blushes.
Standard Liege 2 Arsenal 3.....good recovery by Arsenal who were two goals down inside 5 minutes !
Stuttgart 1 Rangers 1.....an excellent result for Rangers.
Inter Milan 0 Barcelona 0

Also Peter Kenyon has resigned as Chief Executive at Chelsea from 31st October. It is believed that Kenyon fell out of favour with owner,Roman Abramovich, over his failure to sign Robinho last season also appointing Scolari as manager over Abramovich's preffered choice,Ancelloti.

I didn't see the Standard Liege/Arsenal game but saw highlights on the news. Arsenal scored a controversial goal which appeared to include off side and a hand ball. Lucky to win it would seem.

By the way,Gozzo, good luck to Everton playing AEK Athens in the UEFA Euro League tonight....also Fulham away at CSKA Sofia.
A good result will help you and 747man forget Evertons poor start in the Premiership and both your positions in the Udon Fantasy League ! :(

Thanks Zidane. Anything to ease the pain will do. :badteeth:

On the news tonight, Lucas Neil has accepted terms with Everton. This will hopefully bolster their defence.
2 Aussies in the team, that's gotta be a good thing eh. [-o<

AEK Athens tonight. Pity it's not AEK Udon. 8-[

Mixed bag from last nights' Euro stuff...
Tuesday, 29 September 2009
Uefa Champions League
Arsenal 2-0 Olympiakos | Report
AZ 1-1 Standard Liege
Barcelona 2-0 Dynamo Kiev
Debrecen 0-4 Lyon
Fiorentina 2-0 Liverpool | Report
Rangers 1-4 Sevilla | Report
Rubin Kazan 1-1 Inter Milan
Unirea Urziceni 1-1 VfB Stuttgart

Rangers seem to be becoming the whipping boys of their group.
Arsenal cruising at the minute.
Pool will be disappointed to lose to a Fiorentina side - who apparently were well worth the win. With Lyon cruising through as well they need to pull their socks up!!
Same can be said of Milan. Must be in danger of not qualifying for next round now!!
United play equally first Wolfsburg at Old Trafford tonight. Win will see them in a comfortable position. Anything else would be VERY unwelcome!!
Chelsea away in Greece??? A win there would be happy days too, a draw not a disaster.....
Good luck to all tonight!!

Last night Manchester United came from behind to beat Wolfsburg 2-1 with Carrick and Giggs the scorers.
In other matches Chelsea edged past Apoel Nicosia 1-0,Real Madrid beat Marseille 3-0 and Ancellotis former team,AC Milan lost 1-0 at home to Zurich !
CSKA Moscow beat Besiktas 2-1 in Uniteds other group game.Porto beat Atletico Madrid 2-0,Bordeaux scored a late winner to beat Maccabi Haifa 1-0 and Juventus survived a pounding at Bayern Munich to secure a 0-0 draw.
Bad news for Man United is that Michael Owen limped off with a groin strain after only 20 minutes and could be out for up to 3 weeks.....just when things were going so well. :(
So after two matches going well for United,Arsenal and Chelsea.
Rangers are looking decidedly dodgy after the 4-1 home defeat on Tuesday to Sevilla and Liverpools next two games are against group topping Lyon,so little margin for error.

Disappointing set of results for our teams in Europe last night......
Liverpool 1 Lyon 2....Struggling Liverpool lost to an injury time goal at Anfield last night and Stephen Gerrard limped off with a re-occurrence of his groin injury....when your lucks out, your lucks out !
AZ Alkmaar 1 Arsenal 1.....useful draw for Arsenal in Holland.
Rangers 1 Unirea Urzicini 4.....dire result for the Scots.

Also

Barcelona 1 Rubin Kazan 2.....one of the biggest shocks ever in Europe,I think.
Inter Milan 2 Dynamo Kiev 2....Jose Mourinho's team now bottom of this group.

Better last night...
United clinch a late winner to go through 0-1 at CSK Moscow
Chelsea handed out a 4-0 thrashing to Athletico Madrid
AC Milan go to Real & come away 3-2 winners...

Bordeaux still leading Juventus by 2 points in Group A - with Bayern Munich a further point back.
Man U now on 9 points & 5 clear of second placed Wolfsburg in Group B. United really cruising through with the others taking points off each other as well..
Milan & Madrid locked together on 6 each in Group C.
Chelsea 3 from 3 as well & 3 points clear of second Porto. The other two both only on 1 point!!
Liverpool a dismal third in Group E. 6 points behind Lyon & 3 behind Fiorentina. Anything less than a win at Lyon can see them kiss it goodbye for this year.
3 on 4 points & the other on 3 in Group F. Still anyone to qualify (& this is the Barcelona/Inter Milan Group).
Rangers propping up the rest in Group G with 1 point....
Arsenal top by 1 point in final group of what still looks a tight group. Arsenal on their day are undoubtedly the class act in the Group though. Given that they do not have a mighty crash they should qualify...

Manchester United 3 CSKA Moscow 3
Atletico Madrid 2 Chelsea 2

So both English teams qualify for the knockout stages, already. =D>
United were 3-1 down with 6 minutes to go.I think the defending will have to be a bit better against Chelsea.
Didier Drogba scored two against Atletico to earn a point.
Tonight Arsenal,Liverpool and Rangers.....Arsenal looking good but Rangers all but out.
Crucial game for Liverpool at Lyon.Defeat will surely see them failing to qualify.Wont be easy for them with a huge injury list.

Yes good results for both Zid.
United continue to get results when then do not particularly deserve them (by their play) but I would not be surprised for them to get found out again at the weekend...
Agree, good luck to all 3 tonite - Arsenal are all but through & even a defeat would not be a disaster. I think Rangers must already be eliminated & Liverpool certainly need some luck with half a first team out... As they showed at Anfield, Lyon are a fair quality team who are certainly looking to go through to the next round.

A real sickener for Liverpool last night away to Lyon....
In the 83rd minute Babel scores an absolute beauty to put them ahead (Yes Babel, its not a dream) but then Lyon equalise in the very last minute.
This now means automatic qualification is out of Liverpools hands.Even if they win their last two games they have to hope that Fiorentina dont beat Lyon on 24th November or they are out.
No such problems for Arsenal who thrashed AZ Alkmaar 4-1 but Rangers are out after only drawing 1-1 with Unirea.
