Excellent new farang restaurant in Udon

Postby Zidane » May 26, 2008, 3:21 pm

Today, quite by chance, came across this place which opened on May 5th apparently.
Its called Green Leaf and is situated on the same soi as the Koala Bar.
From the Charoensi Complex turn left at the lights heading towards the night market. At the end of that soi (near the Railway Station) turn right at the lights and Green Leaf is on the right hand side, almost immediately.
Extensive farang menu and some Thai food.......steaks,pasta,fish,sandwiches,desserts and drinks which include draught Heineken,I think.
I was very impressed.Just what Udon needs, another farang restaurant with similar standards to the Irish Clock and Good Everything.
Nice to sit in and friendly staff. It got the wifes seal of approval which doesnt come too easily, believe me.
You guys that hang out near the night market, give it a try.I dont think youll be disappointed.About a minutes walk from the drinking area in the nightmarket.

Merci monsieur Zidane... :D I passed it a few times and I wondered about it's content. Just noticed they have a poster up with the food mmmm, posted on it. Seems the clientèle is growing. It's a nice clean bright place anyway... Will give it a whirl soon if I can drag 'er indoors away from aharn Isaan...

My wife and I had lunches there twice. The food it fairly good, and served beautifully. The portions are small by American standards (that's good) and the prices seemed a little on the high side, but not out of line with the quality of the food and the atmosphere.

I just ate there tonight and the food was very good. It is weird though how they do the portions. I ordered a hamburger with fries and the hamburger was big with a bbq sauce on it, but I got about 8 fries. Don't understand why they give so little. We also ordered chips and salsa and I think there were about 20 chips. On the other hand, my wife ordered a rosemary pita wrap and it was only 85 baht and it came with two huge wraps. Way more than I expected and more than she could eat. Anyhow, I recommend checking it out and will certainly be back myself.

Well that is 1 more than I got in Sizzler's... :D

Rosemary Pitawrap sounds like a half Thai/half Fahlang folk singer.

Does she do a 'wrap' version of Rosemary Clooneys 'Mambo Italiano', it would be a pita if she didn't...could be fun.

started to recommend some italian on another thread and turned into a review, so now copy and pasted in proper area:

was at the Green Leaf this evening, nice place. Ree had the black ink spagattie seafood, quite tasty and bit spicy, very nice, 160 bt, me, went with club sandwich, also very nice, different version, egg/ham/veggies/ham and cheese, very tasty, 70 bt, Gem sampled the caesar salad, just ok, 120 baht. wide assortment of drinks, fruit, shakes, cofees/teas, very relaxed ambiance, for those that were complaing it couldn't be found. also...................plenty of parking. in between zap and that other small buffer, maybe 3 places from the corner.

while i'm at it, comfortable seating, plenty of room, open dining area, nothing cramped, can even sit outside if wanting pollution and noise. very nice decor, service was prompt and courteous. on that, a 5% service charge is added to bill, and it is well earned, i usually leave 10, so savings for me, tho leaving spare coins in tray.

well worth a visit. had the rosemary chicken wrap, the first visit, very nice also, large wrap/sandwich thing, 85 bt, i think. ree had the bbq beef w/basil set thing, quite tasty and came rice, fruit and small soup.

will be adding that to my weekly spot, getting a bit tired of outdoor eating, heat/flies are starting to get to me. very relaxing. a very varied menu, soups, salad, apps, thai, farang sandwichs, italian, and different varity of steaks. menu ranges from 50 and up, 350 i think for upper steaks. also had the pumkin-corn soup, hot version, rather nice, tho thia pumkin lacking in flavor, but nice version, especially with the corn, added a bit.

they offer a few italian dishes, lasagnas, and others besides different versions of spagetti, red/cream sauces. worth a try. all quality ingredients, worth of a few more baht.

some pics to follow, sorry, was thinkng. enjoy.

I was in the Green Leaf on Sunday night and I can only add my approval and recommendation of the place. I haven't eaten fahlang food in sooooooooooooooo long and went for vegetable soup, Hawaiian pork steak with pineapple and surprise surprise French fries. They actually serve the dish with rice anyway with a side order of fries. Even the rice was different and not plain but with something added (a spice) making it even more delicious/aloi/sap. The garlic bread is really good. I should have followed LA's example and took photos but it really was beautifully presented. The ladies loved their Thai food (shrimp/pork) and our pork/salmon dishes were really good.

A very good service but my US friend tried his “If I speak slowly the waitress will understand routine” bit just to ascertain what was in the salad but it just didn’t work. However the ladies got the message through.

No complaints. Even the US country and western music was palatable on the night.

We've been a few times now and the food has always been excellent but never had the Country & Western music......usually a tape of Diane Kraal,I think ?
I.A. maybe you should book this venue ahead to celebrate Liverpool winning the Premiership next May and invite along all your buddies from the football forum :D
Maybe invite along Jermaine Pennant as the guest speaker....nah,his drinks bill would be horrendous ! :(

We stopped in for a late lunch and were pleased. Air con running at a good clip so it was very cool inside. A clean place with nice atmosphere and hard working servers. Wife and I both ordered a combo fruit drink (mango, grape, apple and dunno), French onion soup (so-so), and a tasty steak sandwich on French bread (large, it was, submarine heaven). A bit pricey, maybe, but we'll go back to check out some of the other menu offerings.

Music? Faith Hill (C&W gal) tape running at a moderate, enjoyable volume.

All in all, a welcome eatery addition, IMO. :D

Actually it really got to us as to who was singing. Neither of us are country & western fans, we ruled out Willie Nelson (there's Willie again BM) after him we were stumped!

Tell you what Zidane, WHEN we do win the premiership you can join us in our celebratory meal ok? ;)
