Eye testing

Postby Ray.Charles » February 8, 2011, 1:18 pm

I am seriously diabetic.
From the National Institute of Health (NIH), USA:
"In nearly all cases, the health care provider can diagnose diabetic retinopathy by dilating the pupils with eye drops and then carefully examining the retina".
Any recommendation on where to go for this presumably simple test?

I attended an eye clinic in the main public hospital opposite Nong Prajak Park a year or so ago.

I was very happy with the service and professionalism.

However, I am not sure if they do the test you are seeking - perhaps someone in your family could call them and ask.

Ray, I just had a test done in ireland before I left in my local optician. It is indeed a simple test and I would suggest any good optician in Udon can do it. I have an eye condition that can be mistaken for what you have.

Ray Charles first of all this is an unfortunate name for a diabetic since the biggest cause of blindness of the working population in the western world is diabetes!!! i know you are going to tell me you live in East and you are retired but you get the jist of what i am saying.
to give my comments some credibility i am a fully qualified optometrist registered with the General Optical Council in the UK and work in Private practice and Hospital environment. I have a supplementary qualification in diabetic screening and grading. This allows me to examin diabetic patients and quantify the findings and if necessary fast track them for treatment by a consultant ophthalmologist (eye surgeon).
Ray you should get your eyes looked on a regular basis (yearly or sooner if you have diabetic retinopathy) by an eye specialist. In thailand this can create a problem. I have been cosidering opening a practice in Udon ,so i have done a little bit of research. Don't worry I am not completly bonkers i have been married to a thai for 10 years and she is from Udon area.
Firstly there is no recogised optometry profession in Thailand so the guy who has an "optical shop" probably wont be interested at looking in your eyes to see if they are healthy and if he does what obligation does he have to refer you to someone who does?? As Dermot says "its a simple test"? putting drops into the eyes is simple but before you need to ensure there are no adverse reactions and if there are what action do you take. Dilation can be dangerous with some patients and can cause an acute attack of glaucoma.if a drug is used that interacts adversly with systemic meds then this can have even more dire cosequences!!
my advise would be to find an Ophthalmologist (eye surgeon). these people work in hospitals but they (in Thailand) will be able to SAFELY dilate your pupils and examin your retinas for retinopathy and other pathological disease. In the caucasian population 3% of over 40s have glaucoma. so you should also get your intraocular pressures checked and your optic nerve heads examined at the same time.
as jack spratt mentioned he went to Nong Prajak Park hospital . Ask if they do fundus slitlamp biomicroscopy. if not i will have to have a look for you next year!!

Thanks to all of you, especially to 'mai pben rai' for sharing his professional expertise. I shall look for an

I do not want someone to say 'mai pen rai' to me after screwing up my eyesight!
By the way some of you may have missed the humor in the first line of his post. The famous singer Ray Charles was a blind person. There is a movie of the same name.

When is the best time to have your glasses or lenses changed? We sometimes never pay attention to our corrective glasses or lenses we are wearing. Actually we need to check our eyes regularly each year or at least as soon as we feel inconvenient with our recent glasses or contact lenses

Eye testing

Panyavejinter Hospital (formerly Paolo) has an excellent Opthalmologist on staff. She was schooled in the US and speaks fluent english. I suffer from an inflamtory eye disease with a long name which she immediately recognized and was able to continue with my treatment. The only medicine on the market to treat this ailment was also not available here in Udon until she arrived. I wasn't able to find any other eye doctor in Udon who could even spell the ailment much less treat it. Before Dr Usa arrived on the scene I had to travel to BKK to see an eye specialist. Contact the hospital to find out what hours/days she works.

My wife has seen Dr Usa as well.....a breath of fresh air. Took an ingrown eyelid hair out of my wife's eye in a flash. All smiles and easy to talk with.
