First, the US' National Security Agency has the authority (through Congress) to check any and all correspondence between residents in the US and known terrorists in other countries.

Second, if that power/authority is abused, you have no way of knowing about it or proving it unless someone inside blows the whistle.

wow, and i thought i was naive at times, no offence intended. but i truely hope that you don.t believe that any or all forms of communication are not listened to, viewed at anyone's discretion at anytime, whether with a court order, warrant or without. no communication is private, a fact to be remember and heeded. whether electronic, or hand written and the old fashion snail mail, it is all open for investigation for any reason they can think of. national security is pretty much the card blanche expression of invasiion of privacy now of days.

since you were warned, i'm guessing it is not real.

im afraid L A is right, not just america. after theW W 2 america canada, australia france and britain signed up for a security program to intercept various messages and telephone calls, for global security, ever since the technology has got state of the art and certainly since 9 11 everything has been intensified. they can also follow you from satalites if suspected of anything. i doubt your message was real, as they warned you. i think there are certain key words in e mails that the computer can pick up on.

Stan it matters not if it was a troll, or not. The message is spot on, and quite frightening to those who believe in the right to privacy.

Same, same (but different) to the right to bear arms I guess.

Google "Echelon listening posts" if you are interested. But maybe not - no doubt echelon is one of the key words that are captured by the system

Sh*t I am in trouble now. Particularly if I mention the VOA station near my home town in the same post.

Sh*t, I've done it again. Better be quiet now :D

Probably the case.

I could care less ... They can read all of mine and tap all my calls. They'll be just wasting their time and tax payers' money.

Did you ever stop to think that every service provider has access to everything you send in email?

No Privacy

Postby Garnet » May 22, 2008, 7:39 am

It's true -- no one has privacy anymore. And Britain, Othello, is aspiring to be as rigid as the worst:

Britain is considering a massive government database to store the e-mails, Internet information, phone-calls and text messages of all residents to help security forces in the fight against crime and terrorism.

At the moment, records of phone-calls and text messages are kept up to 12 months by telecoms companies in compliance with an EU anti-terrorism directive.

They want to save everything from everyone, and without an expiry date! It's not just enough that you get soaked dearly for taxes. They want your total privacy, too.

Actually does this really surprise anyone? It's just the world we live in. I think the only real difference is that it can be used as evidence in court. Before to do that you needed a warrant issued by a court, to use it as evidence. Doesn't meant that snooping didn't happen anyway.

It's like the camera system in London, crime prevention. Don't know if it really changed anyhting but good theory anyway. I'm sure the guys watching those cameras have thier fair share of laughs at peoples antics.

I would really hope with the amount of internet traffic, that they have something better to do then watch my stuff. I'm not worried about it, I can't even think of anyhting that would cause them concern, much less write it.

I guess the real question to me is knowing that my e-mail and cell phone traffic can be monitored does it change anything for me. The answer for me I don't do anything different then I did before. Will my position change in the future maybe haven't seen that yet.

I would agree a hoax I have gotten e-mail form the states for some six years now and have seen that before.

I'm with Ric and Bump on this one!Although right to privacy should always be of concern to the citizens as not to erode and lose our natural freedom type of lifestyle afforded to most of us in the Western democracies!

It is a changing and evolving World and we must have some changes to evolve with it!

The cameras in England were of great use in solving many crimes!I believe that the phone taps in the USA probably saved many lives and prevented many terrorists acts!I think the debate that rages on about both is good and welcome because it is a check and balance that will help prevent us from being personally abused as regular citizens!

And in case any out there were wondering how I feel about racial profiling and waterboarding?I am all for them at this time in World history.Drastic times take drastic measures and these are drastic times!

I am willing to give up some freedoms now to save my butt so I can fight later if they try to make them permanent in a not drastic situation! After all,if they can't protect us now ,we are doomed to a system that has no freedom later!

War is hell and soldiers always resign many freedoms to serve! We are in a war of idealism and basic human freedoms,we had all better stay alert and be good soldiers that never stop nthe ideas of our leaders :!:

An interesting question Stan - which freedoms are you willing to give up at this stage of the game?

And when the government tells you next week that they need to take away a few more of those freedoms in the name of fighting terrorism, will you also be happy to give them away?

Funnily enough, once having assumed powers (ie taken away freedoms) governments are generally loath to give them back. Just look at Singapore and Malaysia - still using draconian "Internal Security" laws introduced by the British (colonialists) in the 50's to fight communist insurgents. And how do they use them today - to suppress political opposition and dissent.
