Fishing for newcomer to Udon

Postby rick » January 9, 2008, 9:53 pm

Hi,

I am new to the forum and hope to be visiting Udon Thani in early February. First visit to Thailand but have travelled a bit elsewhere; not interested in the 'beach life' of Pattaya so going north due to this very helpful forum and because i hope to look up a friend there.

hope to do some fishing (just gentle relaxing stuff, not monster catfish hauling) and would welcome advice of where to go - close to the city.

I am also looking around for a possible retirement location for 4 years time.

Thanks

John and The farmer;

Thanks for the info. I will certainly be in the irish clock at sometime, should arrive about the 31st of Jan or 1st February if all goes to plan. I understand saturday lunchtime is a good time to meet some of the members there?

This will be a short visit, but hopefully the first of many.

Hi, this is Rick again.

Arrived on Thursday, staying at Top mansion. have already found the tackle shop and a fishery called Saman farm. Hope to find some others next week. Any other suggestions wellcome. I will do a short report of my fishing experiences after my holiday for the benefit of anyone in the future. I can be found at the irish clock usually sometime between 10 -12 am most days

Fishing Report

Postby rick » February 24, 2008, 9:56 am

Hi, This is Rick once more.

As promised, my brief report on fishing in Udon. First my thanks to those who offered helpI fished twice at Saman farm (directions can be obtained from the tackle shop in the night market; the turn off the ring road is the 2nd set of traffic lights after tesco, then about 1 mile and turn left up a small road, watch for signpost in blue with 'Saman Farm', turn left again about 200yards down at next sign). mainly striped catfish, some mekongs, plus pacu and maybe some giant gourami in the stock pond (i caught one). Most cats about 3 kilos. I also fished at a restaurant out past Nong Sim called the 'Orchid Hut'. Only small fish there but a pleasant spot. Not so easy to find but with clear directions it can be found ok.

I did not have time to try out several other places further out from town, but fishing is there for those who wish to look for it. Not with giant fish like internationally known Bungsamran, but reasonable every day fishing.

Met up with a couple of other anglers on these trips, so got a few useful tips about the fishing, and er, the nightlife.

I enjoyed my visit, research on this website here proved very useful, so never got really lost, and my preference of walking every where proved very useful in getting to know the layout of the town, although most locals seem to think that farang shouldn't walk anywhere, but insisted on offering lifts! Will I be back? Definitely.

If any of my some what limited experience is useful to anyone, I will help if i can.

There was a small fishing spot x12 on the map just a turning on the right just before first home estate.
Could you, after all your fishing trips, come back to the forum and quote map references as am no good following directions.
I could then keep one map and mark it solely for fishing.
Cheers

Sorry to take so long, but i did not have anyway of locating the places on the map once outside the ringroad. But i have struck lucky on another thread for Orchid Hut. Look on 'Other places to eat' about 10 topics down and you will find Orchid hut mentioned, as T4/U4 (i personally would suggest U5 might be closer), good directions and photos - also gives you info on the food.

Saman farm is 'about' B4 but this could be way out. I have tried online maps and sat photos but none are good enough to locate it. It is open 10:00 to 18:30 and phone number is 042 348101. When i return i will map these locations and any others i visit in more detail, I saw a number of places which looked like fishing lakes around V3 but no signs of any sort; need a TGF with me to help collect information. I like the idea of creating a fishing map. Udon may be no 'Bung Sam Lan' style location but has the potential for much better fishing than is available at present, or maybe we just do not know where to go!

saman fishing farm

Postby dill » April 28, 2008, 6:41 pm

just got back from a day at saman fishing farm and i found the place really hard to find but once i found it,it was great i will give you some direction and pictures to make it easier to find
comming from the airport onto the ring road towards tesco ,go to the second set of lights and turn left go 1 kilometer and you will see this sign on the left
Image
then folow the narrow road until you see this sign
Image
go to the end of the road untill you get to this
Image
you are there, aproach the office and you wil be able to fish for a whole day for 80 bath per person and that wil include the first bag of bait(bread crumbs)
you wil not be able to bring food in as they have got there own(thats how they make there money)but it was cheap anyhow
i was there for two hours and here are some of the fish i caught.
Image
one fish took me 15 minutes to get to where i was
Image
what a good looking guy 8)
Image

anyhow was a great cople of hours and if anyone else has got any questions on this place i will be more than happy to answer if i know the answer.
i will also be going back there on monday or tuesday (5 or 6 of may)and if anyone would like to go just pm me and we can meet up and make a day of it,can take three people in the car.

Sounds like Saman fishing farm is quite a good day out. Can you hire fishing equipment or do you have to bring your own?
