It would be good to have some competition for the job, especially from English managers who are probably all capable of bringing something different to the job. Just depends how the FA plays it I guess. I seem to remember that their previous attempts to 'run a competition' for a new manager left a few bitter words about it from some of the candidates.
I know it is rather a different situation (because Raymond Domenech was being sacked) but the France situation at the last World Cup should be treated as a warning...

Strike by players to halt Serie A in Italy
The dispute centres around a proposal by clubs to limit the rights of players to refuse transfers, as Juventus defender Fabio Grosso recently did following an offer from AC Milan.
The clubs want the right to insist that when a player has a year remaining on his contract, he must accept a transfer to another, equally competitive club that guarantees the same financial treatment and status.
They propose that if the player does not agree to move he must instead come to a deal over his contract with his current employers.
