Forum icon.

Postby trubrit » January 8, 2010, 9:24 am

Is it possible to place a short cut icon on my computer start up page ? At present I go to my browser page, select favourites, select forums ,then Udonmap, which is all rather long winded especially if I only want to peruse my favourite forum .It would be much simpler just to click UM and go straight there .Can it be done? How? Please forgive my ignorance on such matters. ;)

Hi Val, Once you have your browser open on the UM page, you can select tools on the browser task bar, then select Internet options, then you can select Home page, then click current, it will make your home page UM, then all you have to do is open the browser and the browser will open up at UM, if browsing other sites, you click the home icon in the task bar on top of the page to take you back to UM.

Usually I use IE, so when the browser opens up first it goes to UM, with in the same browser using IE, you can leave UM open and click the task bar open new browsing for other sites browsing.

Alternatively Val, if you are using IE 8 (sorry, don't know about other versions) another option is to:

    1. Go to page on UM that you would like to open at each time.

    2. Go to (US spelt) menu at top left of page “File Edit View Favorites Tools Help” and click on“File”

    3. Go down list that has appeared beneath it with the mouse pointer to “Send” where a sub-menu should open on the right with the third option being “Shortcut to Desktop”

    4. Click on “Shortcut to Desktop” – an icon should now be on your Desktop ready to use.
Depending on how your options are set up you would either click or double click on the icon - IE will then open on that UM page.

Once the browser opens up it will automaticly go to my prefered home page, in this case you will see UM browser open and UT browser open, all just from the one click on the icon on the desktop,

You may wish to have several pages open at once , your favourite news site, UM, stock page ETC

Or just click "Bookmarks" at top of page while on UM, then click "Bookmark this page" and it will be stored in your Bookmarks.

Thanks to both Aussie Boy and JimboPSM. I am using Windows XP and Firefox and all I want is a nice UM icon on my wallpaper, just like I have for Picasa and many other regular favourites. Don't mind which page it takes me to . Seems like I will try to follow Jim's advise and see if it works on Firefox .Thanks guys .

To change the Icon photo, Right click the icon on the desktop, go to properties, go to change Icon, there you will see some poor looking icons that you can use instead of the IE logo icon, choose the logo/ icon you like save/ apply, and the desk top icon will change to a new one, UM has no icon, that you can use,

What you want is easy, but i hope i can explain it because it don't have an English version of windows. So the words in italic i'm not sure about...

Write down or (even better) copy the location you want a shortcut to (in this case: http://www.udonmap.com/ or directly to the forum http://www.udonmap.com/udonthaniforum/). Then go to your desktop and click with your right mouse button. You should get a menu, choose New and then Shortcut (you should see some picture of an arrow). Next windows will ask for a location, type or paste the location here. Press Next and type the name you want (something like Udonmap or Forum) and click on Finish. Now a shortcut is placed on your desktop, if you double click it it will open your browser and the forum.

Val knows how to make a short cut, but I think he wants a different photo of the icon like he said, Picasa logo or any other program that has its own logo, as Udon Map is not a program, it will appear just as a IE logo or Firefox log the link wont have its own UM icon.

Does UM have a logo, maybe we should design one other than Udonmap.com

Open for sugestions
