Thai police arrest German on charges of raping minor

Feb 12, 2007, 11:31 GMT

Bangkok - Thai police arrested a German national over the weekend on charges of raping and abducting a minor, media reports said on Monday.

Police arrested the man, identified as 64-year-old Helmut Nils of Frankfurt, on Saturday shortly after the Udon Thani Court issued an arrest warrant for him on rape charges.

Police Colonel Manit Keowwong of Kudjap district, Udon Thani, 450 kilometres north-east of Bangkok, said Nils was arrested in a rented house with a 12 year-old Thai girl, said Thai Rath newspaper.

Police also found pornographic videos and a digital movie camera containing a clip of the girl doing a strip tease.

If found guilty of raping a minor, Nils faces a minimum jail sentenced of ten years in prison. Nils, a former computer technician, had been visiting Thailand on a regular basis for the past 15 years and was fluent in the language, police said.

They should lock him away and damp the key somewhere into the ocean.

He has money. But hopefully they are going to drain the very last satang out of him.

People like him give Thailand a bad reputation.

I don't believe that people like him give Thailand a bad reputation but they do give foreign nationals a bad reputation in Thai eyes however, not all foreigners are alleged rapists and not all Thai's are beyond reproach.

I somewhat agree Astana, but the reality is people like Bill O'Riley that give Thailand a bad name.

skipvice,
Maybe I can help a little bit. The Germans arrest speaks to the larger problem of ***'s. During the John Mark C. debacle, fox aired snippets of O'Riely's documentary on the Thai sex trade that was done some years earlier. O'Riely followed with the statement that "Thailand is the absolute worst" as it relates to child sex abuse. Sorry for assuming a large number of people would be aware of this event.

Subjects like this are highly emotive, it always hits a nerve but nevertheless a certain minority of mainly men seem to believe that the abuse of young children is somehow legitimized in far from home places like Thailand (our latest pedo coming from Europe), be that as it may.

The media by contrast and the Fox channel being a case in point provide a jaundiced view of the problem and instead of providing a hard hitting factual depiction of the situation, tend to amplify it and sesationalize it to the degree that reality is obscured.

My point being that obscuration tends to play a part in the cycle of abuse and that we as observers never seem to receive the full picture, as we cannot discern if this offender's pattern of abuse started in Thailand or is a legacy of his life in Europe and the possibility of his participation in abuse of children there. It is further obscured by the fact that he is at present only facing charges and has not been found guilty of anything yet.

A two cents worth.

I would suspect that this is a bahaviorial problem that began before he arrived in Thailand. The difference is that here in Thailand it is easier for an individual to engage in this type of behavior than it is in, for example Germany. The reason being is that the poverty of Thailand makes young girls or boys easier to prey upon when offered money or other trinkets.

He makes the third falang busted for this type of behavior here in Udon in the last few weeks.

This is true, and the predators should prosecuted to the fullest, and in those cases where the parents have betrayed the child, they should receive equal punishment. IMHO

Interesting statement - but one that is at odds with Thai culture.

I know a Thai family that just built a new house out in a village. They got their money by pimping their 14 year old daughter to some falang in Bangkok and then sued him.

Here in Thailand, any "harm" to another person can be easily rectified by make a cash payment to the family - be it for a sex matter, murder or even a death in an auto accident.

Unfortunately - unless you are the individual that has done wrong and can afford the price to rectify the situation - things are not going to change. As we have said time and time again - TIT - This Is Thailand.

I suppose that what needs to be debated at this point is whether the Thai Culture is all that off base. Sure, it is contradictory to Western Standards - but then again - putting people in prison does nothing for the victims, other than giving them some intangible satisfaction that the perpetrator is suffering. Prison certainly isn't a deterrent for a large number of predators.

It should be noted - for the sake of discussion as well - that the young girls here can also be predators. It certainly is not uncommon for high school girls to be soliciting both Thais and falangs for sex in exchange for money or more.

Ultimately, it certainly is not a black and white issue or situation.
