Getting Snipped - A Vasectomy Thread

Postby Jed » August 23, 2011, 4:10 pm

I'm going to get snipped Friday. Do not want another kid, and my wife's having some problems with her birth control meds, and related absence of monthly visitors, etc.

Anyway, it's about time, and I was just wondering... Does anyone know any reason why getting a vasectomy might be problematic?

There are lots of rumors and anecdotes, etc., about side effects, but as far as I know, it's perfectly safe, healthy, and without so-called side effects -- except for the obvious one of removing oneself from the gene pool, which is a shame, but there you go.

I imagine many of you have severed the old cords, and was hoping you could share your experiences before I go in a few days.

For example, would driving home myself be a problem afterwards?

And...I hear there are some of the little fellas left in the system for up to 6-8 weeks after the cut. Is it really necessary to be careful during that time?

Appreciate any comments or tales you might want to share.

Funny, when I asked my doc about "after effects," he said, "You mean, going crazy? Some Thais believe this."

Anyway, not too worried about that. Look forward to any responses.

It is a very simple procedure, not painful.Mine was over 30 years ago,was done in a clinic with a local anesthetic, don't strain yourself for about a week and make sure you don't get it infected!

Did mine in Family Planning Association in Honkers ...... only problem ..... after I was preped they brought in a class of med students to watch ....... I was trying desperatly to hide under the covers ...... yes you should have sperm count check as a follow up and take precautions unitl you have a confirmed zero count.

You will be able to drive home .... but might be sore for a week or so afterwards ..... recommend Y fronts rather than boxers whilst you recover!

Yes.
I recommend getting tested at two months, and then again at six months. Better to be safe than sorry.

The lab mentioned in this thread can do your testing, 400-500 baht per test.

I'd also recommend getting some Tramadol (available at most pharmacies), in advance. In case you need something for pain. We all handle pain differently. Again, better to be safe than sorry
If you have someone to drive you home, ask them.

Good luck. Congratulations on making a wise decision =D> .

Getting Snipped - A Vasectomy Thread

Had it done in 1978 while in Okinawa. The doctor injected me with something...told me to count to ten, then proceeded to do his thing. Whatever he gave me, it didn't bother me that he was probing around down there with a knife and scissors.

"Probing." That's a nice way to put it.

Appreciate all the responses; very helpful so far!

Briefs not boxers on Friday, then. Good tip!

As well as a few Tramadols; gotta laugh when the hospitals keep trying to sell you Paracetamol for a few baht / pill.

I have some Celebrex left over from a minor surgery, and they again pushed 3-4 times as many as I needed on me -- does anyone know if they'd ease the probe (pain) a bit?

Thanks again - Jed

Jed, Had mine little more than a year ago. Very simple procedure. Takes all of 10 minutes. The doc made me wait 30 minutes before he would let me drive home. I did not take any pain meds after but I was a little sore for a few days. I would also recommend briefs as opposed to boxers for a week or so.

The Director at AEK Emergency Department will do it, on the spot, approx 1 hour from what a friend told me.

If in pain u need a medication that is for pain relief not an anti-inflamatory. Tramadol would help, as would Paracetamol, it depends on your pain threshold etc.

There would be sutures, some internal ( will disolve ) and external, which need a 7 day post op removal.

I know any genital surgery can be uncomfortable for a few days, some slight bleeding post op, and its normal practice to also offer the patient a female sanitary pad for the first few hours after, whilst the inflamation and wound settles down.

Thanks Wazza, great info; and yes, he's the man: Dr. Boonsom.

Actually, he was excising a cyst on my temple last week when I asked him about the snip.

He said if I had 10 more minutes he could do that too, as long as I was on the table and all.

A little too fast for my speed, I told him to do one thing at a time please, and I'd be back next week for more.

He's obviously good, and well experienced, with a sense of humor. He told me they'd use a local anaesthetic, and I asked if it was from Ban Dung or Tha Bo. He had a laugh over that, and asked if I'd prefer something Made in the USA.

Well, now that you mention it...

Although I should note he went off track in our discussion at one point and started talking about circumcisions...then caught himself, and was soon right back on vas deferens and seminal thingies. Guess it's all snipping and cutting to a general surgeon like he.

A bit pricey as usual at Aek, but man, can't beat the service; they can only dream of this kind of service in the West! Gotta love it!

I guess the ability of the doctor is the most important thing.
I had this small opertation 15 years ago, 2 hours total spending the the hospital.
Got a taxi back home, but I could have driven myself without problems.
The only problem I had is that my wife had a joly good laugh when next day my balls were totally black
No pain and sex was as nice as it was before. So, don't worry!

Getting Snipped - A Vasectomy Thread

Postby BobHelm » August 25, 2011, 2:58 pm

Had mine done in the UK over 30 years ago.
Local anaesthetic, drove the 20 miles home myself after the operation.
Only issue I had was that about 5 minutes into the operation the surgeon suddenly exclaimed
'Oh Dam'
Through his mask. As you can imagine, my blood pressure increased to a new all time high at this.
He smiled at me & said
'Sorry, cauterising machine is not working'
& proceeded to replace the fuse in it as my heart attempted to stop trying to escape my rib cage..

They did recommend that I bathed daily in salt water for a week - to discourage infection & encourage healing - but I don't know if that was 1970s HNS saving on medication or good advice... :D No real pain (couple of Paracetamol that night to help me sleep), but, as others have said, changing colour of the rainbow testicles for a couple of weeks...

Getting Snipped - A Vasectomy Thread

Postby jackspratt » August 25, 2011, 3:07 pm

I had the snips (in Perth) more then 9 years ago, and it is one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Had it done on a Tues afternoon at the doctor's surgery, got driven home (but could have driven myself), took the next day off work (but probably could have gone in), Thurs at work, Friday arvo I flew to Bali (on my way for work in Jakarta on Monday), and Fri night I road tested the equipment with a sweet young Indonesian lass.

She was a little inquisitive about the elastoplast I had on one of the incisions (the other plaster had already fallen off), but once I explained, everything went without a hitch. :D

I had mine done in a private clinic in the UK. Absolutely no problems and they gave me a souvenir tie that depicted a pistol and the initials I F O B. I fire only blanks! To reassure the ladies .
