Gillette Shaving Cream

Semperfi, you keep forgetting you're in Thailand. Your life here is going to be miserable if you keep comparing US prices with Thai prices.

If it's any consolation, the Gillette I mentioned is 0.4043 baht per ml, as compared to 0.5428 for the Big C generic brand. You can buy a cup of coffee with the savings!

Whatever whets your whistle!

Hey thanks for reminding me parrot. I have actually been getting along much better these days. You've probably noticed my complaining on the forum has been cut about 90% lately, but I had a relapse this afternoon when I read about the shaving cream. My wife says that I'm the one with the PMS in the family, so maybe that explains it!

What about the location of that Maya Restaurant. I'd like to take in lunch there tomorrow and pick up a couple of those shaving creams on the way out.

Maya is roughly K-12 on udon map. Just down the street from the Srisuk Post Office. Look for the big Wall's ice cream sign outside of the building.

Grid L12 on udonmap. The knife and fork is the Maya. The beauty supply shop is about 30 feet before you reach the Maya. The street is one-way, coming from Phorsri.
The satellite post office is at the end of the soi (quick in/quick out, compared to the main office).

Next time you worry about the prices of US goods locally, think how much you're saving on a kilo of garlic (last priced at a whopping 35 baht per kilo.....17.5 baht per pound), or on a handful of mint (about 5-10 baht), or the bottle of fish sauce (about 22-25 baht per big bottle). And if that doesn't work, consider the dental cleaning you get for 500 baht....and you don't even need to call in for an appointment at most places! Try that in the US. And (not to drag this out toooo far) if that doesn't work, take your lawnmower in for a spot weld to the village welder for 10-20 baht. Okay, one last....getting a haircut in an airconditioned shop, no waiting, for 70 baht. 120-200 baht if you want a stylist to do the hair. Try that in the US!!
When I get worked up in a lather, I try to remind myself that I'm living the good life.....retired at the age I did, enjoying life, while most people I know back in the US are paying for swimming pools they don't use, SUVs they don't need, and $7.95 for their bowl of Vietnamese soup. That usually disperses any of the soapsuds.

I can't actually remember the prices but I have found Ngee Soon to be the cheapest on both Gillette shaving gel and razor blades. Check it out its in the dept on your left as you enter. Nice range of deodorants too .

Gillette Shaving Cream

semperfiguy wrote:This shaving cream is one of the biggest rip-offs that I have seen in Thailand. Back in the States I can buy that 418 gram can of Barbesol shaving cream for $1, so call it 30 baht. I buy the generic Gillette Foamy from Big-C, and it's 175 grams, made in Thailand and costs 95 Baht, so call it $3.17 per can.

But the thing that really gets me riled up is the cost of lady's Nivea products or any simple body lotion product. My wife buys the Citra body lotion, but only if it's on sale. Regular price is around 165 baht for the larger size, and the stuff is nothing but watered down crap that I could buy in any Dollar Store in America for ...you guessed it...$1 compared to $5.50 for Citra. It's manufactured locally, so I can't fathom what in the world would make it so much more expensive compared to a similar product manufactured in the US. The inconsistency in product pricing and value for money spent is becoming more of a problem in Thailand. I push the grocery cart when we go shopping and I pre-program my cart to stay clear of the pharmacy/toiletries section of any store. That's the only way I can manage my blood pressure and my budget at the same time!

Yes, ol' Cas Walker was the man. My Dad used to watch him on TV, and of course us kids had to watch what Dad wanted. Just reminds me how shameful today's families are with the kids controlling the TV tuner and grown-ups sitting there watching cartoons in prime time because Mom and Dad don't want to disappoint little Johhny and Debbie! If I even looked in the direction of the TV tuner back in those days my Dad would have worn my butt out with his belt.

I heard a new word the other day on a US news program which is now being applied to describe this current generation of young adults in Western culture...the "boomerang generation"! Yes the "baby boomer" generation got it all wrong when they started giving their kids everything they screamed for and withheld "the rod of correction". The same thing is happening here in Thailand. I've never seen a Thai male child get a "whoopin". That's why they all grow up to be spoiled little monsters with an attitude of entitlement. They see the soaps on TV and grow up watching the men slap their women around, committing adultery and sitting on their lazy butts drinking all day...then Dad acts it out in their own home...and the cycle continues.

Sorry to get off topic here guys. Just needed to let off a little steam. I feel better now! Cheers and enjoy the pics!

Gillette Shaving Cream

Off topic but related.

This weeks Oz ABC comedy/advertising show "The Gruen Transfer", pointed out that almost all hair shampoo around the world is the same product. It is a detergent which removes oil, while hair conditioner replaces the oil extracted by the shampoo. Of course each brand has a different perfume.

They pointed out that the retail price differences between the brands is dependent on the skill of each company's marketing, design and advertising departments.

As you know hair is dead (that's why it doesn't hurt when you cut it).

Gillette Shaving Cream

Postby WhoUrDaddy » September 17, 2011, 10:45 am

Shaving Gel??? Stopped using that years ago, just soap up your face with what every you are using and shave away. Gel does nothing but shave you savings, LOL. I wouldn’t give one baht to Gillette, as they sell the worst name brand twin blades I’ve ever used. K-mart were the cheapest and best in the states and used to have them shipped over when I got here. Takes 2 Gillettes to get a decent shave and they should be embarrassed. Although the rest are worst.

You will have to accept, that basically everything is more expensive in Thailand and lousy quality, not many exceptions, then go from there. Remind yourself why you are here, presumably in a relationship and for myself, tired of the PC world and special interest groups. Breathe, relax, sit on the veranda and drink your favorite beverage, smoke if you got ‘em.

OT would rather stick a telegraph pole up his derriere than go without Gillette shaving gel (not foam - crap), his triple blade disposable razors and Nivea revitalising Q10 after shave gel every morning. It's called male grooming - the WFBs like it.

Great pics, I had almost forgotten what he looked like. Don't forget the Reverend J. Basil Mull. He would always say on his radio show that Cas Walker has the best nuts in town, and then ask his wife, ain't that right Ms. Mull. She would always say, that's right reverend! As a matter of fact, that is all I ever heard her say. Our first TV was a RCA and we had antenna on a 35' telephone pole behind house. Old man would shout out window to my brother, who would relay to me and I would turn a crank which would move smaller pole antenna was attached to so we could get the best of whatever was showing on the three channels available at that time. I got bit by a 'Possum' one night so our mother made him put an electric motor on the pole. We had an old three legged Coon Hound who killed the possum which turned out to be rabies free. As I sit here and type this in my rather expensive Lazy Boy chair from Robinson's, one of my retirement presents to myself, I count 7 remote controls. Talk about progress!
