Grass seeds

Don't get excited I mean for a lawn. We have looked all over Udon and the only thing we can find is sod. We are talking a rai, so seed would be the way to go I believe.

Any ideas?

As you're heading on Makkaeng, from Phosri to Srisuk, on the left hand side about 3/4 of the way to Srisuk, there's a seed and pet food store. I buy my parrot's sunflower seeds there. At one time, the owner had grass seed in one of the containers next to the sunflower seeds. Don't know if she still has them available, but it may be worth checking.

I know two people who have tried grass seed.....one bought seed from the US and another bought seed from a store in Pattaya. Neither worked....but don't know why.

The hot season is just around the corner.......hot and dry. If you're planting seed or sod at this point, you'll need plenty of water to get it through that time of the year.

I think you will find it difficult to grow Thai grass from seed .Obviously it must start from there at sometime but it is mainly a creeping variety that propagates by stealth . That is why when you see turf being laid it is not butted up closely to the adjoining one but a large gap is left between so that they creep towards each other, eventually meeting and matting together. So you need far fewer turves's than you would normally use.Of course from this sort of grass you are never going to get a bowling green surface but what you end up with is far more durable and hard wearing , also able to withstand the long dry spells we get.It is also more resistant to the encroachment of weeds, a major headache. That's been my experience with my one rai garden anyway .

looked up rai in my dictionary and it is 1,600 sq. mt. or 4 times the size the plot our house is on. if you can buy the seeds your next problem would be getting a seed spreader because you could not do this well by hand on such a large area of land.but before that you are going to have to prepare the land which has to be done well if you seed it,first to clear the land you will plough it,level it, roll it, rake it, roll it and rake it again. you need fine soil on the surface.then you can seed it,sod as you call it is more expensive than seed but you will have a better chance of quickly gettin a good established lawn if you use sod.

Actually two fish pond I'm trying to protect now. Bought enough sod to cover the rim area. Then picked three Kilos of grass seed at the place Parrot mentioned, not good for a lawn. But, excellent for the area I need it for.

Once we mark on where the house is going the area will shrink a lot. The two fish ponds cover about a 1/3 of a rai.

I had though about a layer of sand but we are talking serious money for that.

The rest can wait till Budha wants to water it

No I need the grass watered

If the grass seed doesn't work out for you, you will be surprised by the grass that just seems to come out of nowhere once the rains begin. Of course there will be a lot of weeds also, but with regular mowing the grass will eventually dominate. Another alternative is to buy sod and break the pieces into plugs about 2-3 inches in size and set them in the soil at about 12 or so inch spacing. The creeper grass will eventually spread out making a nice lawn. It won't happen overnight, might take a year or so, maybe less here in Thailand. Have seen it done in the States with success. Probably some info on the internet. Good luck.

Ya we are already seeing that now that we have started watering, I was very happy to see it. Whatever is natural will always work better, Even have some growing down the pond walls.
