What kind of health insurance do you guys use for your families?
How much do you pay/year and what are your thoughts about it?

I find it very hard finding a good insurance covering the hole family, not including me but my lady, her sister, mom and dad and our doughter.

Any help is more then welcome

Why do they need a healtinshurance when they have free healtcare in Thailand and the Gowerment hospital has the best doctors in Udonthani and the most of them work as consulters for the Aek and Paolo? So, in my opinion thats the best and i have a patient in all those places and now....i only go for the gowerment hospital.

If you need the healtinshurance in case of long sicknees ore disability i allways use the Krungsri bank and the office at homepro, there you can meet friendly people help U whit this kind of long term inshurances cover for extrem cost of healtcare and also give money if.....somebody dies..

The trouble with all the local Thai agents is that they generally don't show you all the options for limits of coverage. They will try to sell you their most expensive plan with no regard for what is best for you. They're only interested in getting the largest commission possible. I speak from experience on this! I finally decided on AA Insurance Brokers for all of my insurance needs. They are an insurance broker and they have quotes from all insurance companies in Thailand. The paperwork is given to me in Thai and English, so there's no confusion about what I am purchasing. The local agent in Udon is from England and all the staff in the main office speak very good English as well. They are efficient and very professional. I have gone to the local companies to try to beat AA's price and value...and so far they have proven to be the best around. And most importantly...they will not try to oversell you! My 18 months of experience with them has been excellent and worthy of recommendation.

Was thinking about medical insurance a couple of weeks back (after bad experiences in Thailand put me off years ago). Contacted an Insurance Broker who deals with expats insurance, and after a few e-mails I received one which contained the following paragraph .....

We do not work with the local Thai providers. We used to, but no longer do as we found that they did not offer comprehensive enough cover and were sometimes troublesome with paying claims. Our business is based on renewals and long term clients and we found that the majority of our clients on local Thai plans were not receiving the high level of service that we/they would be used to from an insurance provider.

Which pretty much summed up my own experiences with AIA.

Well now I'm a bit confused but im guessing the reason for having a health insurance would be that incase of an emergency you could get threated in a private orgouverment hospital without having to be put on a waitinglist in the gouverment runned places? And also in case of death you would get paid?

Let's say you have an bad motorbike accident and you'll get rushed too a hospital. With a health insurance i would expect the person to get threated immediatly with all the cost covered by my insurancecompany.
Would the outcome be the same with the free Universal healthcare system?

Try your local bank as most of them have insurance offers providing you are under 65 and use the banking facilities.

For a more detailed enquiry ask at the bank when you visit.

Dudde, to the best of my knowledge not all Thais qualify for free universal health care in Thailand. Certain military families and families of government employees are entitled to mostly free care, but not all. My wife is a retired (early) government teacher, but not what they call an "official government teacher", and she only qualifies for treatment at the government hospitals so long as she continues to pay her monthly Social Security payments. However, having said that, anyone can go to the government hospital on a "pay as you go" basis and the costs are much lower than the private hospitals. And, I understand that many of the same doctors that practice at the private hospitals see patients at the government hospitals as well.

So, stattointhailand, were you able to come up with some good options for expat insurance through this broker to whom you have referred? I'd be interested to know about their plans if they are offshore and will pay in Thailand.

I had a very small accident and went to hospital by myself. I got all expenses back from Road Accidents Victims Insurance or similar. It cover all cost for both driver and passenger and if some third party needs to be hospitalized, also for his/her costs. Just an example, but traffic accident victims are here better covered than in some western countries (IMHO). Just in cease of accident. For normal visits it is good to have some cover.

You are wrong semper. ......
All Thai citizens are entitled to free medical care. Thaksin's government introduced the 30 baths rule that gave everyone the right to health care at a cost of 30 baht. This is followed up later by Abisiths government simply removed the cost of 30 baht, and carried out completely free healthcare. This required that all Thai should be allowed free health care is that they can identify themselves with an ID card. For that service should be free to you, as in most other countries, follow the normal procedures, that you are ill and have an infection so you go first to the local clinic, if further help is needed to be referred to the hospital.

In case of accident is of course directly through the hospital.

You are absolutely right kjellsnell! I stand corrected. Do you want me to report for death by firing squad or by hanging? I wasn't aware of the recent changes and should have consulted with my wife first on the issue. She just confirmed what you have stated.

What everyone seems to be missing here is that medical practice in the Udon Thani government hospital is significantly different from medical practice in a private hospital. The same doctor may work in both places but the time he/she has available for treating a patient is much much less in a government hospital primarily due to the large number of patients. Personalized care is absolutely not to be found either. The patient load at the government hospital is much greater than at a private hospital therefore nursing care is also lacking with nurses undertrained and overworked. Another factor is bed/room availablity. Go into nearly any government hospital and you'll see hundreds of patienst lieing on chairs, sofas, and beds in hallways and nearly any available space because the wards are all full. It doesn't only apply to Udon Thani either as I observed the same conditions in the government hospital in Ubon Ratchathani. Having been through both the government hospital and private I would choose a private hospital every time. I would strongly advise those of you out there without medical insurance to consider trying to obtain some sooner rather than later if you're looking for any kind of quality medical care.
