Hello! (and meaning of name)

Postby robertcoogan » September 25, 2011, 6:58 am

Hello all, my wife and I are new here. She is from Udon Thani (her name is Ann) and we both miss Udon Thani a LOT. We especially miss the great food! Plus the long walks around the big lake I really miss. My mother in law lives only a 5 minutes drive from there, and my sister and brother in law live nearby in Nom Bua Lom Phu (hope I spelled that right).

I do have a quick question - I know my wife's name in Thai means "stout" in English. But my stepson's name is Aod - does anyone know what this means? I ask my wife and she just tells me "I don't know."

Many thanks!

It's hard to know for sure just looking at the English transliteration of a Thai name....but if your wife's name is spelled อั๋น (which means plump, stout), it'd be pronounced more like 'On'.....although Thais may adopt the more English version of Ann.
If your stepson's name is spelled ออด, it means 'squeak, peep, small sound'. I'd be more prone to spell it like Awd, but when it comes to transliterated Thai, there's no good system.

If you don't have a Thai keyboard, you can have your wife write the name on a piece of paper, take a photo of the paper, and post it here. I should be able to give you a good translation/transliteration of the Thai name from the photo.

We live about 1/3 of the way to Nong Bua Lamphu.

My wife says his name is more likely pronouned OTT in english. If so the Thai meaning is tadpole. This is a common name in Thailand.

If you want to type something in Thai, and your keyboard doesn't have it, there is a good virtual keyboard available:
http://www.puttipan.com/thaikeyboard/
Type it, then just copy and paste.
