Home computing of the Future

Postby BobHelm » January 5, 2012, 9:14 pm

I had this advert sent to me...I have bought things from ebuyer when in the UK in the past, hence they still send me mails.
They are usual quite interesting offers, so I haven't bothered canceling the mails, even though it is unlikely I will be buying from them in the future.
I say this as a sort of apology as the link is certainly an advert, just there isn't really a way of showing the item without a link.

I am certainly not recommending that people use ebuyer, or the product...just I have used them in the past & they were more than acceptable & I thought that the device was interesting...

So, denials out the way, here it is...

Basically it is a small device that is a home computer, stripped down to the basics.
It is just a small box that contains 2GB of memory (not huge if you want to do business work, but this is for Home computing) & a 500GB hard disk. The processor is Intel Atom D525B 1.8GHz, which is about middle range laptop. It has a keyboard & a mouse & 6 USB ports, HDMI port & D-Sub VGA port & DC-in jack & a Ethernet (RJ-45) port, although it is a wireless device so doesn't need to be directly connected.

The idea is that you fit it to your High Definition TV/Home cinema & have an Internet connection for movies etc..

It is small...
Width 36 mm * Depth 192 mm * Height 192 mm and weights about 1 & a half Kilos.

This is what it looks like..

They are currently selling it at just under 200GBP, which is reasonably cheap by UK standards, when comparing the alternatives.

Here is a video showing the device, which I think is pretty neat!! :D

I always wonder why people put posts up like this. Your sending him a PM, he'll know you sent him a pm when he gets the PM. Why are you telling him your sending him a PM on the open forum? If you have some information about the subject of the thread, why not share it with the rest of us? :-k

Docta 'knows me' through previous personal interactions on the Forum.
I guess he feels more comfortable sharing personal information with me than the whole world.
He didn't say anything that would enhance any other persons' knowledge of this product but asked me to find out some extra details for him which I am reproducing below for all to read...
So no one is missing out on data & anyone that is reading this thread is gaining by Docta's PM to me....

Here is a link to the original product at ebuyer
http://www.ebuyer.com/279898-acer-aspir ... -semec-036
It also contains (at the bottom) customer reviews.

I noticed that they also sell a 4GB model. Here is a link to that, again, there are customer reviews at the bottom

Here is a non biased review..

The one thing that might put people off the ebuyer offer is that the machine is run with Linux as the operating system.
I would be wary of encouraging someone with little computer knowledge to buy a laptop or desktop that ran on Linux. However I have seen smaller devices (notepads & tablets) that are as easy to use with Linux as they are with any other system - because what you want to do is limited & so preloaded for you.
However for anyone that hates the idea of moving away from Windows I also noted that Amazon (USA) have the 2GB device, but with a 250GB hard disk available with Windows 7 Home Premium as the operating system..
Here is a link to there, with a few extra customer reviews....
