Hot Pot Restaurant

Postby polehawk » October 26, 2006, 9:39 pm

Stumbled into the Hot Pot on ground floor of Big C today and had a different but tasty luncheon.

When you sit in a booth, you see a pot of water in the middle of the table. Order the Sukiyaki. The waitress takes down a list of all the ingredients that you want in the soup (wife ordered beef, shrimp, fish balls, pork, squid, three different mushrooms, noodles, Chinese cabbage, young corn, tofu and other assorted vegetables) and they bring it to your booth on small plates. Some patrons prefer to do their own but our nice waitress chopped up all of the ingredients and put them into the pot of water. The pot of soup was brought to a boiling point and pronounced as ready to eat within a few minutes. Wife, nephew and I ladled the Sukiyaki into the bowls, seasoned it a bit with some pepper sauce and nampha and chowed down. Delicious and plentiful. We all had two servings each and there was a lot left over for our nephew to take home with him.

We drank iced tea and the total meal cost was a reasonable 461 Baht. The place wasn't crowded and the staff was very nice and friendly. We will be back. :D

Kitaro Japanese restaurant now have the same hot pot style concept but with Japanese food. It's a buffet, all the fresh fish, sushi etc you can eat for just 200 baht. There is a pot on the table in front of you, you grab the items as they pass you on a conveyor and then you boil them for a while and eat with a tasty sauce. It's very good value IMO and healthy too. I don't know how they make a profit serving fresh fish, salmon and prawns but I guess the Thai's don't eat a great deal.

Yes it was sold and they moved to larger premises due to business success. The old shop was snapped up and will be re-opened as another Japanese Restaurant called "Sumo". I drove past yesterday and must say it's looking very good.

great to hear, never did get around to the old place and the 200 baht buffet, as i like sushi. will have to give the new one a try, hopefully soon. i could use a little healthy eating.

get out of that home cooking farang mode i've been in lately, ribs/meat & potatoes/lasagna and all things beef, although lean, it's all the other stuff that is getting me, gravy and oh yea, my mexican incarnations, more meat and cheese.

That MK is not for me, paying a restaurant the same price as any other but having to cook your own food?! Wasn't to keen on the broth thing either.
20 baht roadside noodles, soups etc far better for me!

The new place is very nice, it has a large air-con seating area, but you can sit outside in the beer garden if you prefer.

Alaska King Crabs are on the menu now, and I believe they were talking about Japanese style steaks cooked on a hot plate in the garden area.

Here's a picture I took last month with my phone. You can just about see 3 beer ladies at the door, probably scratching their heads wondering what I was up to. LOL

I have to agree with the above but again my wifes seems to love it and I think she enjoys showing everyone how well she knows what to order and then cook having been in Hot Pot many times. The duck is quite tasty, although I usually have to specify I want it hot!

As for Kitaro, sushi is not my thing normally but I went to the old one and really enjoyed the meal we had which came as a great suprise. I shall be visiting again in its new location for sure.

yes 3 girls in the pic look like they maybe waiting to serve, and they do all look like they are watching you lee.

ok so not everybody likes the boiling of the pieces of food in the stock but cooking it yourself together with your loved ones/one or even a stranger or the local idiot can be or is part of the fun , try some of the non-suki style foods you might like it, lets face it over 60 million Thais can't be wrong

Same here but I endure it now and again. I love the roast duck and ginger but tofu should be outlawed, it is not fit for human consumption.

I prefer Daidemon (http://www.daidomon.co.th/)... BBQ on your table but once again you are cooking your own.

Not so much vegetables, just good old fashioned pork, bacon, liver... cholesterol city... Bring it on. Enough meat to kill me but just back it up a bit!
