The village doctor and his nurse wife have an only son....now 17. He's never had a motorcycle. He's not done well in school, despite his parents' desire for excellence. Today while visiting the village clinic, I noticed a brand-spanking new motorcycle in front. I asked the doctor if it was his new toy. He said, it's a gift to his son for improving his work at school. The doctor said his son continues to do not so well, but he's seen an uptick, so he rewarded the son for his improvement.
That got my wife and I talking over our morning tea/coffee....not criticizing the doctor/nurse, but pondering whether we'd ever buy our daughter (also an only, lives in the US) a motorcycle if she lived here. We'd like to think not, but realize there'd be pressure to do so.
And that discussion led to today's questions: How many people have you known since you've lived in Thailand who have died on motorcycles?
In 15 years, we've known four, either remote family members or friends in the village, who have died. Of course, we've seen many many other motorcycle accidents along the road where it was obvious there was no survivor(s).
And, is there a teenager in Thailand who doesn't know someone (a friend or close school mate) who has died in a motorcycle accident?
Our guess is, probably not.
And that concludes our morning pondering for this morning before Christmas Eve.
