How to keep birds off window grills?

Postby semperfiguy » November 24, 2011, 4:37 pm

I have a real problem with birds roosting on the window security grills around my house and splattering the grills and windows with bird poop on a daily basis. There is also a 6 inch ledge all around the house about 18 inches off the ground which supposedly enhances the design of the house, but it stays littered with bird droppings coming from the birds lighting on the grills above. It's a real eye sore, not to mention the health hazards and the constant cleaning up after them.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who is having a problem like this, so I'm banking that somebody out there has a solution. I've done a Google search but haven't come up with anything as yet. I don't want to get a cat because I despise the little critters. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

A scarecrow might work or you can set some C4 chargers with motion sensors.

We routinely have yellow finch nest in our window guards. If we don't stop them, they'll built on top of existing nests....so you end up with a condo!
You can buy wide-opening nylon netting (various sizes) that farmers use cukes/beans/etc....or just cut up some of that ubiquitous blue screening to fit your window guard....attach with a few clothes pins until the birds move on. We've used both successfully.
You can buy the netting and the screen on Makkaeng Rd near the city market or at the store that's almost directly across from Kasikorn Bank on Phosri Rd.

Trying to be serious . Are these the damn things that see their reflection in the glass and think its a rival? Well I had them waking me up with the constant tap , tap , tapping every morning until I fitted mosquito netting frames to the outside of the windows, that stopped them, now they spend their day attacking their image in the stainless water tank .Stupid birds .

We have tinted glass and were able to view the entire cycle of nesting, laying, hatching, and flying off from inside our homes. It was interesting for the first few nests, but then we had enough and declared war.

Wire the window grilles to the electrical supply, that teach the birds a lesson, any fried ones can shared out with the neighbours on Soi 11.

A Thai in my estate has put, what looks like, strips of aluminium foil to his grills,to solve his problem, but looks like a loser to me,same as people putting bottles of water out on their driveways to stop the soi dogs leaving a deposit.

Presumably leaving some poisoned meat for them to peck at and devour on your grills is out of the question :-k

A local parking near me lot hangs old CD's on pieces of string to keep the birds away. Or you could try hanging up a few rubber snakes.

Can you tie fishing line across where the birds usually perch to deny them a spot to land? Not very noticable and don't think birds couild perch on the line.

Just a thought as I haven't seen anyone do this.

How to keep birds off window grills?

Postby semperfiguy » November 25, 2011, 6:32 pm

Hey guys...thanks for all the suggestions. I'm still considering all that's been advised, but still looking for a better solution. Thought about hanging wind chimes on the grills, but if the wind's not blowing it won't do any good. Also thought about hanging helium filled balloons, but don't want to give the appearance of having a perpetual birthday party at my house. Still open to suggestions!

Foil, pinwheels and hanging CDs worked.....for a short time. The open netting I mentioned above looks just like fishing line.......you can put it across the guards and it's hardly visible.
