I've found GOOD Chinese Dim Sum restaurant in Udon!!

Postby zoomzoom » September 8, 2009, 12:16 am

I (and my Thai better half) went to a restaurant last Saturday (5th. Sept) that she had noticed, for the first time, the week before.

I think it has, only, been open for 2/3 weeks and is a franchise/branch of a chain which has (I think) another 9/10 outlets in Thailand.

It is called "Chiant" but does not have a sign in Passa Angrit (English).

However, it is situated on Prajak Road just after the junction with Adulyadet Road (on the right hand side if you are approaching from the complex) just after the traffic lights and is next door to the Ayutthaya Bank. (I think the map reference is M11).

The owners have still not finished the "fitting out" and I think that one half (behind glass) will be air conditioned although, currently, all they use are fans.

The place is very clean, as you would expect from a chain, but I did not visit the toilets so cannot comment on them.

Most dishes are steamed (not fried) and those that I tried (including steamed prawn dumplings, steamed pork dumplings etc.) were as good, IMHO, as you will find in Hong Kong!

All Dim Sum are priced between 20 & 40 Bt.

Main dishes are priced the same, IIRC, with one exception - The most expensive dish on the menu is sliced duck, priced at 100 Bt.

IMHO, however, the main dishes are not as good as the Dim Sum although they are generous in size, for the price, and still worth trying.

The place was very, very busy with Thai & Thai/Chinese customers - I was the only "ferang" but I do not think that will be the case in future!!

I, for one, will be a regular customer.

;)

I would apologise for not including/attaching photographs but I left my phone at home!

What is hope??????

Saturday is usually busy everywhere...especially Saturdays following payday. Perhaps give it a visit on a weekday?

Thanks for posting the info. I love good Dim Sum =P~ .

its the franchise dim sum place (Jeang) you see a lot of in Bangkok. i went yesterday, 25 baht is very expensive for dimsum i think... Same price as bangkok... however i also had wanton soup with prawns, that was delicious and only 40 baht, so swings and roundabouts!!!
i once lived in hong kong so i know a good dim sum... The very best dimsum ive had in thailand for all those that get about that is!!! is in Ao Chalong, Phuket... he makes them himself, fresh daily and each dish is only 12 baht, a very reasonable price considering i like to have at least 10!!!!!

Dear ZoomZoom,

Thank you for telling about this excellent dim sum restaurant. The best ever I have eaten outside Hong Kong and KL.
I will go there very, very often  Before I knew only Hot Pot for dim sum in Udon, not comparable.....this is the REAL THING.

Bon Appetit.

MK has Dim Sum too, but limited to lunch/afternoon AFAIK.

There is another Dim Sum only restaurant on Posi road beside the chinese gate near the soi Nong Bua crossing. Had been mentioned here before too.

Hurry and tell Andrew Zimmern to visit before he leaves town! It would give him an opportunity to pan another restaurant in Udonthani.

If you have nothing to contribute to the topic why not just shut up?

Not sure who you are referring to, but it might be prudent to follow your own advice. For example, what is your contribution to the topic in that line? 55555

Wife, daughter, and I went for lunch today. Here's what we had:
2 glasses of grajieb drink (กระเจี๊ยบ) 10 baht each (that's cheap!)
1 glass of coconut icee (มะพร้าวบัน) 10 baht (cheap!)
2 racks of อะเก๋า, 2 racks of ก๋วยเตี๋ยวหลอด, 2 racks of เยื่อไผ่, 2 racks of จีบปู, a bowl of เกี๊ยวกุ้/แดง (all racks were 20 baht each), a plate of duck with veggies (100 baht), a plate of rice(10 baht), a small bottle of water (8 baht), and 1 plate of coconut ice-cream with peanuts/palm nuts/and pumpkin (15 baht).
Total bill was 368 baht. All of the racks were excellent......the duck was outstanding....and the ice-cream was a nice treat. Much more food than we should have had, but our daughter is on vacation so we packed it in.
The bowl of เกี๊ยวกุ้ง/แดง (shrimp dumplings with slices of pork in a nice broth with veggies) was outstanding and will serve as a nice lunch in the future....maybe with one dish of dim sum added on.

The restaurant is directly across the street from the Nissan dealer. We had no problem finding a parking spot. We'll be back many more times if they keep up the good food and reasonable prices. Oh yeah, I suppose it qualifies as fast food.....it's a franchise, it's fast, it's cheap.......but it tastes a whole lot better than anything I'd classify as fast food back in the US.

I'm happy about the reports of a nice place to eat, always good to know.

I just wondered, seeing the title of this thread, do you guys know Dim Sum is a Korean dish and not Chinese at all?

It will taste the same, I will try for sure, just give the credit to the people who deserve it, namely Koreans.

Dim Sum originates in the cantonese china cuisine.

I think you confuse this with BBQ (all you can eat), which is called 'Gorean' in thai.
