You will get far more information if you put your query on the main forum - perhaps even doing a search beforehand.

As a general answer however, the experience of most seems to have been that importing a used car into Thailand is fraught with (Customs) difficulties, and is not recommended.

As JS says, you should be able to find various articles on importing cars using the forum search facility.

The very high import duty on bringing a car to Thailand has been covered numerous times on the forum and from memory the conclusion each time has been that it is way too expensive .

This is a link to the Thai Customs Department guide on importing personal vehicles:

When I was thinking of moving here some 10 years ago, importing a car could be done but the bloody hassle and the Thai Customs would be their normal awkward selves that i decided to give it a miss, the info about the trials and tribulations was given to me by my international movers and although I insisted on doing it at first they made the offer that they would import it but I would then pay all the costs which could be from 2000 to 10000 pounds depending on how Customs was that day. Easier to buy in Malaysia and drive it here or even Laos, but the steering wheel would be on the wrong side then.

It is much easier to import a car from Japan. Drive same side, Asian spec inc aircon and lower import taxes without the model exclusions applying when bringing a car from Europe . There are many organisations will do this for you , including one in Udon .

So there's your answer. Say cherio to the Mrs one sunny Sunday afternoon and drive to Japan. From there you will find it a piece of cake to import your car to Thailand. Job done.

What is that you trying to say??? That´s not true.

Automobile cannot be imported unless the
applicant applies for the permission and
receives the permission from the Ministry of
Commerce before shipping the automobile into
the Kingdom.
This permission is very difficult to obtain for
owners with a foreign passport.
Automobiles and motorcycles are dutiable
items (whether new or old).
• Autos up to 2400 cc duty is137% of CIF
value.
• Autos over 2400 cc duty are 210% of CIF
value.
• Motorcycles pay duty at 72% of CIF value.
• Free duty exemptions are provided to
diplomat.

And to get it into to the Kingdom following is required.

· Automobile registration of the foreign
country.
· Driver's licence of the country from which
the car was exported.
· Original B/L.
· Import permit (must be available before car
is shipped to Thailand).
Documents issued by the immigration
division, Police Department granting
permission for applicant to enter and establish
residence in Thailand.
In the event that the applicant enters in
Thailand to work for the Government or other
institutions, a letter of certification from the
Government Office or institution must be
presented.

Not sure what your saying isn't true but just recently I have been to two displays of imported cars in as new condition. One in the new Tesco in Udon and a much bigger display of models ranging from the Mini Cooper to a Skyline in Centara Khon Kaen .Price range 5=10 million. They all came from Japan were taxed and registered in Thailand .Available for immediate delivery. The salesman told me he could get any model I wanted to order within 12 weeks . :-"

trubritt, now we are talking about a private person, who need a vehicle into Thailand from UK. My answer is applicable for private persons who want their vehicles into Thailand from any country in the world.
What you refer to is a company that has license/permission to import vehicles. So mai same same na, trubritt. Big difference and can`t be compared in any way. But even this company must pay some form of import duty on vehicles they import. How much I do not know.

I did say "many companies will do this for you" I have imported many cars over the years including one under the private import scheme for my wife. The rules were changed however a few years back and now in my view its not viable to DIY.
The taxation is a minefield with every accessory being added to the vehicle value and charged at the maximum 600% rate .
It can take 3 days to get the vehicle out of the docks. That's why I suggest getting a Jap import through one of these specialist companies. Every thing is done for you and they can even arrange finance if you wish . Sorry for the confusion .

How does having the car in a thai nationals name change the import duty? When my wife moved to Australia she could bring her belongings with her without import duty. I was wondering if a thai returning to thailand could do he same, if so it might worth while putting the car in the wifes name
