I would be grateful for any information on requirements to bring our pet dog to Udon from Vietnam by road through Laos.

Importing Family Dog from Vietnam by road

lived in Lao for 5 years.. brought our cat from Thailand in our truck.. Nobody looked.. We had all the Vet immunizations but again nobody looked.. During our stint in Lao, drove back and forth across the Friendship Bridge a number of times with the cat sitting on the truck's armrest.. Nobody looked... Don't think bringing the dog from Viet to Thai via Lao is any big deal but just ensure you have the international cerificate of rabies vaccination and a Veteranarians health certificate on the dog.. To the best of my knowledge, even if Lao or Thai Customs look, so long as you have the paperwork mentioned there's no issue.. But again, they probably won't even look..

Broon you can find the regulations for importing pets into Thailand here:

http://moacdc.thaiembdc.org/ You have to click on "Rules and Regulations" at the top of the page. Don't be put off by the 30 day quarantine they mention. I imported my dog from the US and as long as the animal has all the shots you can "quarantine" it at your home. I don't know what regs the Lao would have to bring the dog into Laos but probably similar, you might check with their webpage if nobody answers on here.

I had kind of the same experience as DK. When I arrived at Bangkok I went to the Thai animal inspector who stamped all the papers, never looked into the cage. Then when I went through customs they just waved me through, never looked at the papers, never even looked into the cage. And it was a big cage for a 65 pound Lab. But I wouldn't want to take the chance and try to sneak it in.

So good luck with the pooch. Just be prepared for the wisecracks "just what Thailand needs - another dog". Such people don't understand what it means to have a pet. :D

For Information we successfully brought dog from Vietnam today.
Wife went with our Vet and dog to government vet for health check, papers prepared for travelling by car via Lao Bao, Suvarnaket and Mukdahan and 3days later back with dog for final check and papers issued.
We called vet in Thai Customs at Mukdahan in advance and he met us, checked papers and allowed entry. No problems at any border crossing.
Hope this may help others in future.
