income needed to stay in udon
what is the amount needed to support a family in udon with a freehold house per month ? (ie no rent in the
I voted 40 to 45 that because I bring that in but many times it has to be increased but I also want to say the increase is for additional expenses which will be finished hopefully soon so IMO 40 should be enough to live comfy alcohol requires much more as well as illness also sex out side the home bed room requires much more income also cigarets only my opinion which is not worth any thing

I think it very much depends on what sort of life style you want.
If you are happy to totally 'go native' & are not purchasing a vehicle then I would think you could live here on very little.
If you like a falang food fix now and again, alcohol & are buying a vehicle then the costs start to creep up & up - especially if you are also supporting extended family projects/crisis.
So I also went for the 45-50 K mark....

40,000-45,000. I support a family of 4 (not incl myself & the dog). We budget for 40,000 a month and we easily get by on that. I try not to bring in more than 40,000 (keeping the balance of my pension in the US), and satisfying the marriage extension requirement.
Although, sh_it happens and we sometimes go over our budget but seldom over 5000. We don't scrimp on our lifestyle. We seldom cook, we eat out or have take away and eat at home (we don't do western to often and I'm not a bar-fly so we save there).

I voted 50-60 because of family expenses and driving costs. We spend about 13,000 on the house,UBC,phones, internet, electric and water combined!Estimate about 7000 a month on car including insurance and upkeep without long trips included!
Tesco and supermarket foods and household goods costs are probably about 20,000 for us as we eat well at home!
School related costs probably average out between 3000-4000!
Eating and drinking out of the house about 4,000
Wife spends about 2000 a month on beauty and misc.
Daughter spends about 2000 on movies,books,CD's etc.etc.
I spend about 100 going back and forth to the ATM

I also voted for 50-60K range mainly because we have been paying 15-20K for last two house rentals. Tried living in the 7-8K houses and hated those for lots of reasons, i.e. noisy neighbors, barking dogs, crappy house, etc. Wife and I lived in the states for 32 years before moving back here so she got used to supermarket shopping. Most of our shopping here is done at Tesco or Big C to the tune of another 15K or so per month.
Looking for that 50-60K spending to drop dramatically since we just bought a house so no house or rent payments to make. Also no car payment. Should be able to live well on less than 40K per month and be able to take a few more trips to the beaches.

My house, car, motorbikes etc. are all paid for. I have a 4 bedroom 3 bathroom house very rarely use the air con. My biggest household expense is UBC. Electric runs me about 1200 baht a month water about 200 baht. I give my wife 3000 baht a week for groceries and such. kid in school 500 baht a week for transportation and lunch. My biggest expense is probable poker games at one of the local expat establishments. 40,000 baht a month is considered upper middle class by the Thai standard. 40,000 a month you can life quite comfortable if house and such is paid for
No man has a good enough memory to be a succesful liar.
Re: income needed to stay in udon
How much would you say it would cost if you ran air conditioning, would 5000 sound about right for one a/c going full time ??
Re: income needed to stay in udon
Wow I think that is difficult to answer Aardvark.
I reckon mine costs me 500 a month for about 8 hours at night, set at 25/26 degrees.
But, of course, running during the day is far more of a strain on it & electricity. Starting temp is hotter, humidity is higher & much more door opening & closing
I would still think 5K is a bit on the high side, that is about 170 baht a day. Don't forget you can get a room at Top Mansion/Ruysuk Mansion for 350 baht a night. That has unlimited a/c for you - I doubt if they would want half their rental to go on a/c costs.

Incidentally, the British Chancellor,Alastair Darling has stated that the UK is facing its biggest economic crisis for more than 60 years and their will be a "significant downturn" in the economy.(BBC World News)
So it might be a case of 55 baht or below to the GBP in the near future. In April 2007 it was 72 baht to the pound !
So income needed to live in Udon might need to be amended a bit for us Brits.

My neighbor runs 1 a/c 24 hours a day for 3500 a month!I run 7 large fans ,washer and dryer and all appliances for 3000!Aardvark wrote:How much would you say it would cost if you ran air conditioning, would 5000 sound about right for one a/c going full time ??
Re: income needed to stay in udon
Even with the current trouble in Bangkok, the pound is down against the baht (about 61.xxx). Damn you Darling (Alaistair, that is)! Guess i can forget about the car..... I would be pushed at present to afford more than 30,000 a month AND support a base back in UK as well. Retirement slips back again for another year.

Pol Pot...Pol Pot...???
Who would wish Pol Pot on anyone? Try asking some of the survivors of the Killing Fields if they would prefer living in England or if they would like to be under the rule of Pol Pot
