Indian Food Accessories

Hand carried heaps of Sharwoods curry pastes back with me recently from UK.

Anyone know, if you can by Safron colouring powder for the rice , papadomsand Nam bread anywhere in Udon.

Nan bread you can buy frozen in Lotus - I bought yesterday. Only had garlic flavour, in frozen foods chests. Would say OK, nothing more, but would say the same for any I bought frozen in UK as well...
Have not seem Poppadoms in town anywhere.
You might try "The Chinese Supermarket", or Carrefour for the saffron powder - although real saffron would work better - and maybe someone can point you in the direction of that as well...

I think Bob thats Malaysian Roti chani your taking about, never seen Nan bread in Tesco although the company that manufactures it does make it (according to the website) but for some reason they don't seem to distribute it.

No it was definitely called "Garlic Nan" - and it was nowhere near the Roti's etc. (well that would be far too logical wouldn't it ). From memory it was in one of the end chest freezers on the right hand side as you were walking towards the fresh meat section. I think it was in with some frozen ready meals...

There is precious little in the way of Indian spices here in Udon. Your best bet is to stock up the next time the next time you get down to Bangkok.

The main requirements for Indian spices are, in no particular order.
Cumin, Chilli and powder,
Tumeric, Cardoman, Mustard seeds, Coriander and seeds, Fennel seeds,Bay leaves, Fenegreek, Cinnamon fresh & ground and of course garlic and ginger.
All these are easily available in Udon, anyone stuck for them give a PM .
The only other man ingredient is Curry leaves, I have not found a source for the fresh ones.

Check out nobi's shop(website), also seen some stuff in Tesco's near the Rice and sauces.

The new Carrefour had a small Indian food section with spices, chutneys and curries. Didn't notice any in the frozen section, but then I've only been there one time.

When I make spicy, it really is, too spicy for my 'ol Lady to eat and she's had a lifetime of training on Som Tum.
I read recently that after the age of 60 the sense of taste declines rapidly, lucky for me I have a few years to go.
Anyway I do like Indian, Mexican, Cajun and similar types of food, when I was in Bangkok I indulged at the appropriate restaurants, as they weren't available when i moved to Udon I have acquired the necessary expertise to make my own. Never too old to learn Or there is no fart like an old fart.

I saw some boxes of Indian curry mixes (dry seasonings) plus some other Indian food ingredients today at Carrefour. The mixes are imported and were around 70 baht per box. They are located in one of the aisles on the far left of the store at the back part of the nice wide aisle.

I picked up some of the Indian Curry Mixes at Carrefour this morning.

Right now they are carry about 6 different varieties, but perhaps if one was to talk to the manager, they might start carrying more.
