Hi,
Forgot to add, getting old is my excuse. Car racing was started by Mr. Rolls and Mr Royce at the start of the 1900's. No racing tracks then. They wanted to have a road race to test all cars, it was supposed to start in England. The English Gov., at the time, refused them permission to close the roads for this event. They approached the Gov. of the Isle of Man and they said they would close the roads for a race. This was called the T.T. and was started in 1904. In 1907 they had motor bikes racing round the T.T. course. This has now carried on for over a hundred years now, and is still going. A few years back they even had a race for battery powered bikes over one lap of the T.T. course, 37.75miles. and rising to 1000ft at one point. These bikes did well, but did not match the speed of the eng. bikes which have a lap record of over 130mph. Not bad when you consider the course has three sharp hairpins where on them the speed is down to less than 10mph.
Also was watching a program of car racing in the 1960's. on Sat.. One driver, in the Mon. race, cant remember his name, led all the way, until his car packed up on the 93 lap. Did not say how many laps the race was. The commentators on Sun where saying this is the longest race in the F1. and a hard race on drivers and cars. There were only 78laps on Sunday, and they only had to press a button, on the steering wheel, to change gear. and had all the wings etc. to help them.
Cheers Doug.
