Insomnia, where to go?

Postby Dudde » January 14, 2012, 7:02 am

I'v been having sleeping disorders, insomnia for my hole adult life. It takes me hours before I fall alsleep and will wake up after a few moments of sleep.
I'll get between 2-4 hours of sleep during a night.
Before people start telling me they'r own ways of falling a sleep i just wanted too say i have been thrue all methods i can find and no natural way have worked. That includes a walk/run every morning and evening too make my body tired before sleep. This comes and goes, i can get times when my sleep is normal but more often then not will i have problem with the sleep. And when it starts it normaly last for a month or two.

I'v been thrue following medicines without any result on me: Atarax, Lergigan, Theralen, Propavan, Imovane(works but turns me in too a zombie the day after), stillnoct, halcion, Fluscand
Stillnoct or halcion together with Theralen normaly works the best on me.

And as you can see they are pretty much prescription medicin all of them so too my question: Can anyone point me too a good clinic/hospital where i can meet a doctor who could help me with my problems here in Udon?

Insomnia, where to go?

Postby lee » January 14, 2012, 9:05 am

I used to have problems with sleep, fortunately I haven't had any issues with it for the last couple of years.

The problem for me was more mental than physical, if I had one night bad sleep I'd worry the next night about whether I'd get a good night sleep or not and then the problem would snowball.

I visited a few clinics in Udon but no one could offer any useful advice except prescribe medication.

If I were you I'd try Bangkok, they have specialist clinics for insomnia, Bumrungrad has it's own sleep disorder clinic: http://www.bumrungrad.com/en/sleep-disorders-bangkok

Insomnia, where to go?

Postby Ray.Charles » January 14, 2012, 12:34 pm

Yes, the problem is mostly mental. Your mind (brain?) has a mind of its own. How to turn it off? Chemicals can do it (you didn’t mention Ambien). Alcohol, a type of chemical, would do it, called ‘passing out’. But, the problem with any medication is your dependency on it. The body wants more and more of it, not to mention the side effects.
Yogic training is probably the best, allowing you to take control of your own mind. I do not have the discipline for it, yet. I take two servings of alcohol before going to bed.
Generally , I sleep better in Udon than I did in the States.
It will be a long time before we will understand our minds, no matter how much of our mind we put to it.

Insomnia, where to go?

Postby Dudde » January 14, 2012, 12:51 pm

Well that is just what i do for the moment. Drink until i can sleep but that's worst then the medicins.
With Stillnoct i can fall a sleep and mixed with Theralen it keeps me sleeping until the morning.
And unlike many i have no bad symptoms from them the day after. And since i only take them 30 minutes before sleep my family don't have too have a walking zombie in the house (or a drunk) so i prefere the medicins.
I never eat them for a long enough time too get addictive on them, and i have no problem stop taking them at any moment. They are just a way too help me fall a sleep when i rely needs it.

The reason for my sleeping problems is mostly due too my choice of life and the way i choosed too work.

Btw the active ingridients in ambien, zolpidem is the same as in stillnoct, or stillnox as them are named here in Thailand.

Lee: What clinic in udon did not prescribe the meds too you and witch did? Could be usefull for me.

I think Lee gave you the best advice, go to a sleep disorder clinic. You won't find one in Udon.
These clinics can sleep test you overnight and determine if theirs something physically wrong with you
causing the problems.

Sound like maybe you just want to know who to go to to get the meds you want. In that case go to any
pharmacist and tell them what you want and that it was previously prescribed to you. If that doesn't work
go to any Doctor and tell him the same thing.

I thing you already have some insight to you sleep problem as you said "my sleeping problems is mostly due
too my choice of life". Maybe time to make some changes?

Or, if you're willing to try something radical, check yourself into one of the falang-friendly temples in the country......an opportunity to get away from all the ill's that might affect a good night's sleep. Certainly not for everyone, but probably less addicting than any medication.

Insomnia, where to go?

Postby semperfiguy » January 14, 2012, 11:14 pm

Dudde, I had the same problem back in Taipei in the late 80's for nearly two years. I was single at the time and was working in a very high stress position with tons of worry. I drank way too much thinking that would help, but in fact the booze has the opposite effect if you'll study it on the internet. When I got a steady girl to settle down with me, that was the magic bullet. I stopped drinking and changed my work environment to eliminate the stress, and I've slept good ever since. Stress and worry can make your body go completely haywire!

The visit to the sleep clinic is probably the best advice anyone could give you, but I would also say that you should rid your body of all the meds and give up the booze in the evenings, and once your body adjusts to being in a natural rhythm again you'll probably be able to sleep like a baby.

Insomnia, where to go?

Postby Frankie 1 » January 15, 2012, 12:00 am

Dudde, treatment depends on the cause of your problem. There are two common causes:

1. The problem can be related to a distorted day/night rhythm of your body. This is usually related to a distorted hormone production in your brain, called "melatonin". People who have this kind of problem will get good results with melatonin medication. Of course you should ask a professional doctor about this (prescription).

2. An other cause can be stress related. Then your body produces too much adrenaline, which causes your lack of sleep. If that's the case, doing activities to make your body tired won't help and will actually have the opposite effect, because by doing that you produce even more adrenaline, and therefore won't be able to sleep. What you need in a situatin like that is structural rest of mind. A meditation course in a Buddhist temple could be an option to consider.

Good luck.

Insomnia, where to go?

Postby Ray.Charles » January 15, 2012, 12:26 am

Out of the 3Ss of life: ****, Sex and Sleep, one of them gets a lot of press, but the other two are a lot more important to health, especially at later stages of life.
It does sound like preaching: there is not any substitute to your taking control of your own mind, not in the long term.
I spent a night at the Rutgers medical school's sleep clinic, all wired up and monitored. The clinic is considered a good one in the States. The students and the doctors probably learnt something looking at the recordings of my sleep pattern; but it did not help me very much other than learning that I snore a lot. I wish you better luck at the Bangkok clinics.

Xanax is not a medicin you use for sleep. It's antidepressive. Yes sometimes doctors prescribe Benzodiazepine as sleeping meds but then it's medicins with the active substance of the following :
Flunitrazepam
Midazolam
Nitrazepam
Triazolam

Never should a doctor prescribe you with Xanax, Alprazolam for sleep.
And off the record i did use Xanax during one time of my life and i took 2mg 3 times a day and it did not help me sleep at all but then again the doctor didnt prescribe it for that reason either.

And i don't want to go to pharmacies asking too buy prescription meds without a prescription. It's illegal [-X and i prefere to do it the right way.

Drinkin dunna help and can cause anxiety which can lead to insomnia.

The older pharmacist at the Somsak Pharmacy is a doctor, speaks great English, and knows his meds, Western, Asian generics and ayuvedic (?)... A real nice guy, and bein older, understands...

Da doc at AEK Udon had me on a name brand 'scrip. This doc, asked if I would like to try the Thai generic version, less than half the cost of the name brand.

I asked his opinion. He said it was good. I tried it.

It was good.

His brother runs the pharmacy on the 2nd floor of the complex, and is also very good.

Insomnia, where to go?

Postby trubrit » January 15, 2012, 11:30 am

A few years ago when I was writing articles for a couple of magazines on a monthly basis and had a deadline to meet I found I was waking up in the middle of the night for a wee and then was unable to get back to sleep again as my mind was racing away at ideas I was having for them. I didn't worry too much about it at the time as being retired it really didn't matter when I slept, night or day, as there was no bus to catch, but the trend continued even after I had stopped my writing so I looked for ways to break the habit . One thing I found , and it appeared to work was , here in Udon we have an orchid farm, famous for its dancing plants. They produce a tea made from the dried leaves of them that has a very tranquillising effect, it can be drunk either hot or cold. It worked wonders for me. a cup just before bedtime and although I still woke for a pee, I found that after I could get straight back into the land of nod .I was particularly pleased as I am adverse to taking man made drugs for anything, much preferring natural remedies if possible .May not work for everyone but surely worth a try, not expensive either .Can't find a link to the place but I believe it is called "Udon Sunshine'

Insomnia, where to go?

Postby LiveLongAndProsper » January 15, 2012, 11:35 am

You asked for places... I'll be specific.

If you are looking for medicine and not therapy you can get valium (ask for Diazapam) pretty easy, but you have to send your Mrs. in to get it for you in most places... they won't sell to men because of the endless possibilities... Used to be able to get Attivan... but that's even harder to convince them to give you. (Best to go to Wattana or Panyavejinter/Paolo)

Educate yourself or talk to a Doctor before taking it though...

The pharmacy on the corner near 7/11 at the Centerpoint market may have it...

Also, if you go to Wattana... they'll give you some medicines to help with it, Xanax and Tryptanol or something like that.

Harder to get that sort of medicine these days, the gov is really cracking down on that sort of thing... Can't by Actifed anymore cause you can make Ya Baa out of it too easy.

Maybe this is the tea trubrit. If you can tell us how to find it for purchase that would be great!
