Udon provides numerous opportunities to access the internet. Internet cafes such as Pop Pop's I Cafe near Nong Prajak Park provide high speed internet access from only 15bt per hour. Free Wi-Fi hot spots are beginning to pop up around town, businesses such as the Irish Clock, Mojo Bar, Thomas Resort, President Hotel and many others offer free wireless internet access.

If you're staying in Udon on a more permanent basis you may consider GPRS as an alternative option. All you need is a GPRS enabled mobile phone, internet SIM card and a computer. Connect the mobile to your computer via Bluetooth, or a USB cable, insert the NET Sim into your mobile phone and dial-up via your computer. It's not incredibly fast with average speeds around 112kpbs, however it's faster than standard dial-up and you will be able to access the internet from anywhere within the kingdom. Most mobiles have GPRS access these days, but if doesn't have this technology, don't despair; you can buy a GPRS modem card from the shopping complex to do the same job. Just slot into your laptop and you're ready to go. Net Sim cards are available from most mobile phone companies, we recommend AIS (now named Telewiz), they give you 200 hours access per month for only 540 baht. Telewiz is located on the second floor of the central shopping center.

If you're living in Udon and have your own telephone line you may consider ADSL broadband, TOT and TT&T offer several packages starting from 790baht unlimited access/download per month, with speeds starting at 512kpbs and is pretty reliable too. Contact 1103 for more information.

If you're located a little further out of town but are out of range of a telephone line and/or ADSL then you could install a broadband internet satellite dish. IPSTAR offer this service, the cost per month is a little more expensive, however it provides high-speed internet access to even the remotest of properties. See this website for more information http://www.ipstar.com/en/index.aspx

Last but not least you can connect to the net using a standard dial-up connection via any telephone line, this option can be painfully slow at times, however it provides easy access to the internet. All you need to do is buy a pre-paid internet card from any 7-Eleven shop, computer hardware shop, or shopping center IT section. Look for a card with the name Loxinfo, CS Internet etc. Cards range from 120 baht for 10 hours to 380 baht plus for monthly access using 1222 dialing number.

Wow! I wasn't aware of this one! Is that really all the cost? No traffic volume limit?

need to get the sim card at telewiz, or authorized dealer, then all you do is top up you 1-2-call account, whether at a top up point, such as Pop Pop's internet, or simply buy the advance pay card, 300 baht, couple of those, and any excess is carried over. sign up for sawadee calling program, is/used to be 2 baht a minute for calls. i actually use true move for phone use, 1 baht a minute, use the other phone strickly for internet. you wouldn't be living in thailand if you didn't own more than one phone. 8)

The 3000+ Nutter is back……………DON’T THINK SO.

BUT, this one is kind of important, so have to post.

Those considering phone service in udon/Thailand or having problems with you AIS contract, it’s not you. I just canceled my short lived contract with ais, as if I didn’t learn in the past. Every time I had a contract with them, we disagreed on the bill………..every time. If you want to use ais, use 1-2 call, seems bit better. I’ve been with them for 9 yrs, since they were the only dependable game in town, now there are more and cheaper options. I used them for GPRS, as I rarely use the phone anyway, now DTAC offers the same and consistent service.

The final straw for me was my October bill, which I forgot to pay, no penalty for that. BUT, I get 100 hours for 374 baht a month, and phone calls extra at 1 baht a minute, which I rarely use the phone, except for internet. Not only do they show me using all of my 100 hours, but charge me for going over 338 minutes. That is literally impossible, because oct I was out and about and used wifi at all the hotels I stayed at for 3 week, basically not using ais. Though back for one week, so if I sleep for 8 hrs and used the internet for 16, well, that explains it. This month, nov, I did use 100 hours and went over 2 hrs on purpose, as I ran out, and wanted to see how much the charge for extra, as in the past the charge 1 baht for 5 mins. That was a big mistake. I checked on the 6th, the phone auto recharges/clears to -0- on the 7th. I had 122 minutes extra, mere 2 hours, they of course claim I not only used 100 hours, but went over 310 minutes, literally impossible. now at one baht a minute.

Now my November bill I, which resets on dec 7th, I picked up at the post office on the 8th, now that’s fast service, especially when it was closed for kings birthday and Monday.

So I conceled the contract yesterday, and they prorated this month, charging me one day, and giving themselves one more chance to steal just a little bit more. 374 divide by 31 days is 12 baht a day, for 3 + hours a day, so they charge me by the minute for yesterday, 17 min=17 baht. One last turn of the knife in the back. So I was overcharged approximately 400 baht, added to my regular 375 baht monthly…….no thanks.

So if considering ais, use 1-2 call, though I’ve also had minor accounting problems with them. I also have True Move and would be a recommendation, as I have never had a problem with them, again, I use prepaid cards with them. Friends use DTAC for phone and GPRS, and are quite satisfied with service and accounting.

Just my opinion if considering phone option for udon/Thailand. Me, I’ll be using the library once a week for my internet as I’m there anyway, plus so many other options around town, w/free wifi. I really don’t use or need it that much at the house. Contrary to one troll’s opinion with all of 27 post at the time, 4 asking for info, from the 3000+ nutters, and the other 20+ post, whinging about something. If the troll checked, I posted less than 4 posts a day, considering I’ve been on UM since the beginning. But that would of actually taking thought. Was good for a chuckle though.

Ok, back to my non internet cave.

I am using 3BB Broadband. For ~630 THB/month, we have a good bandwidth using the fist package...

And, what is great with 3BB : you don't have to suscribe for a 12 months contract. You pay 1,000 THB more on the first month and that allow you to stop your contract whenever you want.

I signed up to 3BB last month.
Very good so far, and only 390 baht a month for 4mps, which is fast enough for me.

What is this 3BB? mobile internet? Do you need a usb dongle or just pop the sim straight in your phone?
...4Mb/s is great. Can you really get those download speeds?

Thanks :D

3BB is the new division of TTT that handles ADSL. Now, TTT handles the landlines as I understand it, and 3BB manages the Internet side of things. Speeds are getting better slowly, and some folks are getting 4Mb/s.

I just checked mine here in the Nong Khai sticks and I'm getting 3.89 Mb/s, but I'm paying more for the Business Package, not the Indie package, which costs less, and has more users sharing bandwidth.

From what I've heard, it slows down substantially in the afternoons when the kids get out of school and log on to...play.

Mine is pretty variable, too, though generally improving over the past few years for sure. Increasing competition is improving speeds - if not service...

The CAT Telecom air-card also works well in Udon Thani (and in all towns around Thailand except bkk). Around 10,000 to buy the air-card and then 700 a month for unliited internet access.

Your speed with the CAT card will depend on your location, and especially your proximity to one of their towers.

When I spoke with them last, even they weren't too enthusiastic about potential speeds.

All depends where you live, what's available there. Good luck - JEFF
