Internet censorship - again

Postby BobHelm » April 8, 2011, 6:10 pm

Interesting that the lawmakers in Washington cannot agree on minor matters (like what the Government budget should be :D ) but weighty matters like large companies losing money are right at the forefront of their thoughts...
In the interest of protecting the entertainment industry’s intellectual property, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee is working with his House Republican counterpart to crack down on online copyright infringement.

It would not exactly appear that the current laws are light weight or toothless - well going by this case..
Brian McCarthy ran a website, channelsurfing.net, that linked to various sites where you could watch online streams of TV shows and sports networks. A couple months ago, the government seized his domain name and on Friday they arrested him and charged him with criminal copyright infringement -- punishable by five years in prison.

Very much a case of 'do as I say not as I do' from the lawmakers. Don't forget that they hammer China relentlessly about internet freedom of information & ideas there - all the while pushing American legislation very much to allow similar to web sites world wide.
The laws on copyright are clear enough in ALL developed countries & provide adequate re-dress already through the courts. It does not require the draconian measures that legislators in both the USA & UK have tried/are trying to introduce. Both countries have shown a complete lack of interest in protecting the rights of the individual citizen in favour of the big bucks contributions from the industry.
It is a disgraceful situation that all too clearly highlights the way 'Democratic Government' is rapidly heading in some countries - far far away from the citizens & towards corporate bribery!!
