Investing in a small franchise

Postby easterneye » April 2, 2010, 12:51 pm

Hi all
Apologies if I have posted this in the wrong forum , mabe a mod can put it right ,,, but as I will soon be retiring to Udon and the wife is a lot younger than me , she would like to have some form of small franchise business ie , food or clothing , there is no great financial expectation here ,, but a little something she can do to make ( herself )a few baht.
My enquiry is has anyone any reccomendations or on the other side of the coin anything to particularly steer well clear of ?? also just as an aside ,,,,,,,, if I were to get bored in my leisure time ( which I very much doubt ) would I as husband of the business owner be allowed to help her in her work ?

There are many franchising opportunities. Most include training. They seem to cover nearly all occupations. An internet search will keep you busy. Here's a place to start although it's mostly service businesses.
http://www.thailandfranchising.com/

I had coffee at a little hole in the wall a couple months ago. My wife knew the guy running it. It was a franchise. They trained him for a couple of weeks on running the business and gave him an inventory to start. 30,000 baht.

A family acquainance started a wholesale bakery in her home. She went to Bangkok for a month of training and learned how to make a standard set of products, marketing, and bookkeeping. They sold her the equipment and training for 100,000 baht.

Nearly all the clothing brand sales in places like Robinson's are separate operations that lease space. I think this also goes for shoes, cosmetics, etc. Some of them are owned by companies that have the brands they represent in many stores; Robinson's, Cental, The Mall, etc., but I think some are probably franchises, as many of the clothing, computer, eyeglass, spas, etc. shops in Central Plaza and UD Town may be. I'd bet the popular foot cleaning with little fish is a franchise. They're popping up everywhere.

Then there's many different restaurant chains, some of which (Oishi, McDonald's, etc.) have started appearing in Udon. Bigger bucks. Also 7-11 and most petrol, LPG, and CNG stations are franchises.

I'd be mostly interested in the training phase of her franchise.
