Invisible junction at Nong Sim

Postby Andrew-Udon » June 14, 2011, 1:49 pm

A couple of days ago I noticed a new mini roundabout (circle) under construction between Nongsim lake and the nearby temple. There aren't any traffic lights on this junction so a roundabout is quite a good idea in theory.

Last night they were discussing this on P Channel, apparently there had been several accidents since the roundabout was constructed because it's almost invisible at night. There are no painted markings on the concrete curbs and spot lights were installed in the middle pointing outwards dazzling oncoming drivers.

The temporary structure was replaced with a more permanent structure a few days ago, permanent cement curb islands were added but not painted yet and spot lights in the middle at drivers eye level pointing outwards. They were discussing it last night on the news.

This is what the circle looks like in the day, at night it's very hard to see. I notice today they are painting some markings on the road so it shouldn't be too much of a hazard any more. :D

There are a few places around this area that are known to have WFB's available for a bit of romance. So, I can quite imagine it will not be the last time that someone with something else on their mind hits a kerb, I've done it myself although not where Andrew has shown in the photo.
The normal thing that will happen is you will drive into the kerb and then realised that you should have known better because you had been warned.

for the last few years there have been attempts to make this junction safere from traffic lights ( which most ignored ) to now this roundabout which in reality IF Thai drivers understood what to do would help.
However after nearly into the back of a Thai who stopped to let a person coming onto the roundabout have precedence one wonder what if anything they are taught about them. To say at night you cannot see it is stupid I often drive there at night nary a problem, but then most Thais cannot see beyond their steering wheel so I am not surprised. I expect more of us will get to know this junction with the impending move of the Bookshop.

The Bookhouse&CS should put a signpost on the new traffic island directing customers to their new place. Second thoughts, a driver would sooner or later wipe out the signage together with the kerbs. Forget that.
