Hit the submit button by mistake...

The argument that if you make it illegal to own handguns then only criminals will have them, then the problem is not with the law making it illegal to own them, it is with the enforcement.

Anyway, as another poster said, Americans want their guns, and they will keep them. Nothing is going to change that, any time soon, I am sorry to say. Because American men want to feel macho in that we are "protecting" our families by our own means, then the society at large must suffer.

Well yes if laws were made to stop decent law-abiding citizens holding guns, criminals might be the only people with them. BUT then comes the cultural thing, when I was a police Officer in the UK, I never carried a gun but the public outcry IF a Police officer was even shot ( not killed ) was immense and criminals tried bloody hard NOT to KILL police officer or for that matter anyone else.
Honour amongst thieves and all that stuff springs to mind, it is not just that people can hold guns it is the cultural accepetance that it is OK to shoot people that is also part of the problem.
One is aware of American Heritage the frontier, gun toting cowboys which transformed into gun-slingers, many a child across the world knows and sees many western films about American so-called history. To be fair to change that would be to the detriment of the film making world etc:- In short the culture Americans hold is due not only in part to the Constitution but also to the history of that nation and the culture of gun ownership that was born out of its history.
To change that would need a monumental shift in culture of the American people and I do not for one minute think , that that is going to happen anytime soon, but every time a person uses a gun in indiscriminate killing, it does bring that shift a tad closer I think. For what it is worth I think the 2 Amendment is long overdue for re-writing, but then I am not an American. But I bet the dead Americans who have died from guns in America would agree with me.
