Japan new year tuna sale sets price record

Postby BobHelm » January 5, 2011, 8:46 pm

Quite extraordinary a price of nearly $1,170 a kilo on gross weight.
A tuna has sold at auction for a record 32.49m yen in Tokyo, nearly $400,000 (£257,320).
The fish was a blue fin, a variety prized for making the finest sushi. It was bought by a joint Japanese and Chinese bid.
The first auction in January at Tokyo's Tsukji fish market is a cherished part of Japan's New Year celebrations, and record prices are often set.
Japan is the world's biggest consumer of seafood.
After bells rang at 0500 local time (2000 GMT on Tuesday) to start the sale, bidding was brisk.
More than 500 fish were laid out on pallets on the concrete floor.
But the lot that attracted the most interest was a giant 342kg blue fin tuna caught off Japan's northern island of Hokkaido.
The winning bid was made jointly by the owners of a restaurant in Tokyo's upmarket Ginza district, and a sushi chain in Hong Kong.
Restrictions on catches have been tightened in recent years because of concerns about overfishing.
Traders at Tsukiji market say growing Chinese demand for sushi is also helping to push up prices.

The Japs set another record also Bob.

The amount of whale meat in storage , as they continue to plunder the Australian Antartic waters in the name of " Research " only to have their own population snub the meat in increasing numbers.

I ve been watching the whale wars tv programme recently and these Jap buggars are getting away with murder in the name of research , tho there are some strange types aboard the Steve Irwin greenpeace vessel as well.

While the Japs are turning away from whale meat the Brits seem to love it so much so they even named a royal prince after them ......thats The PRINCE OF WHALES boomboom .

Mash ...... tried whale meat once twas Blubbery

Mash

just to correct a few minor bits in ur report.

Greenpeace not involved with the Steve Irwin - Its the Sea Sheppherd , who take the Japs on head to head , they had their vessel last year rammed and sunk, and both Oz and NZ governments refused to get involved with the maritime investigation, gutless pricks. BUT the Oz navy will send a ship 1/2 way round the world to protect piracy off the Coast of Africa.

They are too afraid to take on Japan in the world courts, as they worry about the balance of trade , rather than protecting Antartica from any sort of plundering , be it whaling, minerals will be next.

Whilst Japan support nations with overseas aid that have a vote on the International Whaling Commision , the loop hole will never be changed. Thailand is included in this with the Japanses agency JICA well and truly entrenched in making sure Thailand votes with the Nips.
