Khao Pansa Buddhist lent

Postby trubrit » June 29, 2011, 7:39 pm

This starts on 15th July . Just a reminder for those that like to get out and about that the Candle festival in Ubon Ratchatani is from 15th to the 17th this year. For those that have never seen it I highly recommend it as one of the very best festivals in the whole of Thailand. :D

I am i right in thinking Khao Pansa is the start of Buddhist lent and Ork Pansa is the end of Buddhist lent , so this up coming is the start ?,,,, Khao - go in .... Ork - go out . Just testing my Thai , even a humble purveyor of sausage has time to learn to speak Thai .

Without wishing to appear like a plasterscene class kid or Billy bingo i must clear my name !!

I actually was enquiring if this Khao Pansa was indeed the start of the end of Buddhist lent like the start of the Christmas period etc , so is it the start of the end or the end or the end of the start leading to the end or Ork Pansa which is a period of time marking the start of the end of Buddhist lent.

Pleased thats cleared up , dont feel half as stupid as i did earlier !!.

Mash .........the end , or is it the start ??

Yes you are correct pnm. The 'kao' (เข้า) in kao Pansaa (เข้าพรรษา) is the same 'kao' that is used for start/enter etc.
And therefore the 'oak' (ออก) goes along the same limes (meaning exit or end).

Well done. You're not as daft as you look, as me mam would say.

btw, Thai is a funny language isn't it. As I was looking up the various usages of 'oak' (ออก) in Thai I came across a few funny ones. In English we say 'to lay an egg', right? In Thai it is 'oak kai' (out egg!).

I also noticed that the name of OPEC (The org. for Petrol exporting countries) In Thai ends with 'naman oak' (oil out).
Didn't understand the rest of it, but the end was funny.

Anyway, thanks for the food. The scotch egg and pork pie were lovely.

Thank you Nick , next time bring your other half Mo shes miles better looking then you and doesnt drool half as much whislt eating.

I think you will find the Ork or Oak as you wrote it is actualy whats called a" classifier " there are numerous in the Thai language i think 15 0r 20 odd , so this classifier will be added to the word at signify the word / noun has come out , ended .

As an example another classier is "luuk" which applies to any object that is round or circular beit an apple football or egg .

Tb is quite right the Khao and Ork Pansa festivals are both high profile events , whilst leving in Buriram i experienced both tho somewhat vaguely as after sartour induced coma i the illucinations kicked in i thought i was a Congolese ballet dancer ,,,,,,, not a pretty sight Mash in tights

Not sure if im normal or not ,,,,,,, but WHAT IS NORMAL ??

Mash.

OT lent some money to a buddhist and never got paid back, so even if they are from Khao Pansa, OTs advise is: it's better not to.
