School building burnt down in suspected arson attack in Thai northeast


A wooden school building in Thailand's northeastern province Nakhon Ratchasima was burnt down Sunday night, in what police suggest was an arson attack by political undercurrent groups, Thai media reported Monday.

News network The Nation reported on its website that the blaze broke out at the old wooden building of Ruammitr Pattana School in Prathai district at 9:30 p.m. (1430GMT) Sunday.

Fire trucks arrived too late to save the 30-year-old building which was quickly engulfed. The fire also spread to a nearby new building but fire fighters managed to control it.

Police sources told Xinhua that this was the sixth school torched in Nakhon Ratchasima after the Sept. 19 coup last year which ousted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

The military Council for National Security (CNS), made of coup- leaders, had accused "political undercurrents", referring to supporters of Thaksin and its Thai Rak Thai (TRT) party, of stirring up troubles againtst the CNS and the current government in the northeastern and northern provinces, considered strongholds of TRT.

The latest fire could also be a work of the political undercurrents, a police source said.

A fire engulfed a 25-year-old department store in another northeastern province Khon Kaenon Friday night, causing damage of an estimated 50 million baht (1.39 million U.S. dollars) but no casualties. Police has yet to decide the cause.
