Here's a sign that might appeal to those of you who have lived in Udon for a few years......I've never seen a store advertise this 'service'. Often times, numbers or a word or two of English in a sign will help give away the rest of the meaning. This sign is one such example.

If you're new at reading, I'll break apart the first line to make it easier to read:

ที่ นี่ รับ แลก เหรียญ

It's one of the pleasures of being able to read elementary Thai.....to know of services such as this that surround you every day.

My wife and I shop there Parrot. Product and prices are both good; however, you'll find the best pork tenderloin for the best price at Makro's new fresh pork section. We've tried all the cuts of pork for stir fry, but after we switched to the tenderloin we'll never go back to the other cuts.

Out and about around town yesterday along the ring road......Global House to the old Big C area, I saw several large signs in Thai advising drivers (in red letters) จุดเสี่ยง

The rest of the sign (again, in Thai) advised drivers that the area ahead was the site of many accidents.

Anyone want to take a stab at จุดเสียง?

Yep, the signs warn drivers of dangerous areas along the ring road.

I've read of motorcycle races in the evening on that stretch of ring road.....Global to the First Home intersection......that might have something to do with the number of accidents.

Usually the sign on the sidewalk or storefront says "ปักชื่อ"........every parent with school-age children knows where to find these stores. But today's sign at the front of a small shop on Phosri Rd said "ปักด่วน"..........you'll see the same 'ด่วน' on most every car for sale.

Any guesses?

One of the brothers at the "Hole in the Wall" (my name) restaurant lived in the US for many years and has his degree from USC (I believe). He speaks perfect English and he teaches Thai, individually or with groups. I don't know how much he charges or how good he is as a teacher......but judging by how he operates at the restaurant, he might be worth giving a try.
His name is Bahm. He might be the one with the light brown hair. You can find location details at this thread:

Separate Note: At the Nikuya Japanese Buffet in UD Town with a friend a few nights ago. All self-service. There's a wide assortment of drinks to choose from. One dispenser has several different EST (Pepsi replacement) flavors.......and one small sign that says: โซดา
Do you take a chance and try it.....or do you pass? You won't know what to do if you can't read the sign.

In my case, I like cutting my EST (Pepsi) with about 75% soda water.........it's to my liking. If I couldn't read that sign, I might think it's a tap from the bidet in the nearby men's room. One never knows:

I stopped by the Hole in the Wall for my fix of หมูผัดขิง stir fried ginger/pork and talked with Bahm about his Thai classes. He's currently teaching an American and an Australian....separately, in his home, near Ban Hui market. One is concentrating on reading, the other on conversation. He charges around 2500 baht for 12 hours (for one-on-one). He does a lot of tutoring....teaching English and Thai, as well as working in his family's restaurant.
Give him a call on one of the numbers shown.....no need to be concerned about him understanding you over the phone....his English is excellent.....or stop by his restaurant and yak over a plate of excellent Thai food. โชคดี

There are few things worse than saying ไอ้เหี้ย to a Thai. Unfortunately, many foreigners (including me many years ago) learn a variety of gutter Thai and don't understand the implications of using it.

In the latest episode, Deputy Prime Minister Plodprasop referred to protesters at the Chiang Mai water summit as 'garbage'......then, when questioned about his comments by reporters said that that word was too soft.....instead, he referred to them as ไอ้เหี้ย ai-hia.

My advice to anyone wanting to try out words like this, other than in front of a mirror, is to wear a flak jacket and a helmet.
