Leisure Reading

Postby cali4995 » May 12, 2008, 11:50 am

I've been in Patters this last month, making the rounds at some of the used bookstores. I'm amassing quite a little collection of Westerns, War fiction, Misc. stuff, even a couple of Thai phrasebooks(scary thought).Quite surprising what you can find.

If anyone's interested, I'd be happy to pass them along(free).Only paid 50-100B/piece. Nice relaxing way to spend an afternoon and I know pickings for reading material are slim in the Udon city area. Even the Bangkok Post can get stale after a time. =D>

CALI4995, you might want to check with Harry Klinker at Harry's Bar. He has a fairly good 'exchange' library upstairs above the restaurant/bar.

I am lead to believe that Harry's no longer has a book swapping facility, the entire collection now resides with Fuzzy Ken.
I am also lead to believe that Fuzzy wants 70B for a swap of each book!
I stand to be corrected but if true it is hardly in the spirit of the original idea.
I have a few, same as Cali if anybody want to swap for free.

End of an era. That was a popular venue for farangs from near and far to come once a week and borrow books. No charge and no purchase necessary.

I was hoping to make it back up there around the 1st of June, maybe we could
start some unoffical swapping. New books start at 350B and rapidly go up from
there, it's sobering, even if you are able to make it to the bookazine somewhere.
I can't bring myself to pay 600-700B for a book, it seems excessive. Some of the used stuff you find they don't even sell stories like that anymore so just as well.
Even going to the cinema nowadays, I can't remember the last good movie I saw. #-o

Thank you Roy, nice offer for sure.

If this is true about the collection, it is truly sad. Most of those books at Harry's (and I'm guessing there were hundreds) were given to him with an understanding that it would be a free swap type situation.

Now Harry has GIVEN/SOLD the collection to FKen? And FK is now charging us for the swap?

What a FU&KING SHAME.

Sorry, but this transaction between H & FK just doesn't set well with me....but it's not really my business since I never gave/borrowed any books.

How do the rest of you feel, especially those who gave to the collection now to find it has turned into a money generating affair?

I guess they call this progress?

To HeII with progress, I like things the old way.

Its not sitting well with a number of us I_N, in fact I believe my friend told Harry his point of view with both barrels the other day

I believe the total collection was well over 1000 books, the vast majority donated

well, we have a library in udon, start donating, then they will be free to take out to members, and free i believe. maybe they can set a english section up, till larger selection then have a spot just for english books and such.

shame if books were sold, i donated quite a few myself.

I have a hand full of books I can part with and thought about donating them to the city library. Why let someone else profit from donated books? Here's the link for more info on Udon library:

I personally do not have a problem with some one making a profit as I have bought many books in BK and swapped them back to the bookstores for 30%-50% credit against purchases. But now I swap or loan and borrow with friends!

By the way,we presently have 300+ Thai love story books that my daughter has accumulated over a 7 year period. They originally cost between 35-50B with most at the 35B range.Been thinking about donating those to a girls orphanage and/or giving them to some friendly local Thai vendors! In BK they buy them back from you as they rent them out for a 5 baht profit, but up here they don't want to do that!

I tried to talk my daughter into selling them at the Sunday and Wed. night markets, but she just made a pooh pooh face and moaned.16 yr.old Thai girl spoiled like a falang girl

All

The Udon Thani library located between the 1st and 2nd circles already has an english language book section. Unfortunately it is not very well stocked with novels and leisure reading materials. The librarian tells me that the english language books are all donated. Obtaining a library card is quite simple and the people speak english. May I suggest that we look around our homes and gather up the books which are gathering dust and haul them over to the library for all to use FREE.
