Limits on how much you can take out of Thailand

Post by bumper » May 1, 2009, 7:36 pm

Yuo can bring in a much a yuo want to, but getting it back out is a different story something to be aware of just changed some of my plans for sure. So does that mean you sit up that 800K account for the annual and you can only take out 50K, to return to your home country?

I vageuly remember a story within the last few years where a farrrang ran into this when they sold the condo they were in. The bank deemed it to be a supicious amount and would not release the funds. That ring a bell for anyone else. Man you have to be careful here.

c. Currency Regulations 1) Foreign Currency

Foreign currencies can be brought into Thailand without limit. Any person receiving foreign currencies from abroad is required to sell such foreign currencies to an authorized financial institution or to deposit them in a foreign currency account with an authorized financial institution within 360 days from receipt, except foreigners temporarily staying in Thailand for not more than three months, foreign embassies, and international organizations.

Foreign exchange purchase or hedging with authorized financial institutions is generally available where a genuine underlying current or capital transaction exists.

2) Local Currency

There is no restriction on the amount of Baht that may be brought into the country. A person travelling to Thailand's bordering countries including Vietnam is allowed to take out Baht up to 500,000 Baht and to other country up to 50,000 Baht respectively without authorization.

I have been told by Bangkok Bank that I can remove cash from my savings account using my Be1st VISA/Debit card while in the US by withdrawing up to 500,000 baht at a time, daily. If using the card in a US ATM, the amount I receive will be in US$.

Git the regulation you quote clearly refers to currency (banknotes), and most countries control the amount of currency you can take out when you cross their border.

Hi,
Works the other way as well.
If you want to buy a house etc. here the uk banks will only allow 200,000B every 24Hrs to be withdrawn here on your debit card. No matter how much you have in deposit. If you make arrangements with your UK. bank, informing them what the money is for etc., prying gets, you can get it in one go after about five days, this was four years ago. I decided to go to the Thai. bank every morning for five days, even started to get tea and biscuits after first day, withdrew one million Bhat and paid for house without anyone in UK knowing what it was for. The bank here wanted me to take a loan out, i refused thank god. Exchange rate then was 71B to the GBP now s**t.
I returned to my country last year and withdrew 100,000B to take with me, be it in sterling as the uk. ex. rate is rubbish. Why anyone would take Bhat out i do not know. There are ways around most problems.
Just reading closely i see "except foriegners staying not more than thrree months", I think this should mean 90 days, img. never uses 3 months as i recall. Then i was on a multi "o" visa and had to leave LOS every 90Days. Also i wouuld not set up a bank account with 800,000B in it. If single just prove your income is 800,000B a year. or 65,000B a month. Keep your money in a account that earns interest.

Cheers Doug.

States have limits that yuo don't have to declare as I recall up to 10K more then that you have to list where it came from and why it's being moved. It's a defence for money laundering.

True on the amount here I'm slowoly working my through this banking situation and things look pretty rosey really.
