Two local news items....one not in the media.
Not in the media:
An intruder broke into the home of an elderly falang friend of ours around midnight several days ago in the Ban Jan (บ้านจัน) area. Apparently the intruder entered through a bedroom window. The intruder stole the man's wallet and then struck the man with a wooden pole several times on the face and on the knee. I'm not sure if the intruder did so because the man put up a fight or whether the beating was non-provoked. I visited the man in the hospital today.....eyes still black and blue, but otherwise recovering. The police were alerted, took a report, but no one has been apprehended. The man's house does not have security bars on the windows. No further information available.
The second, in Thai at http://www.udon108.com/board/index.php? ... ic=67410.0 describes the drowning of a M. 3 student on 28 December while out on a school-sponsored camping trip in the Ban Phu area. The boy was from Gutjap. The kids were under the supervision of two older ?technical school students? (supervisors). The kids were apparently doing some sort of rope climb activity over the water in the evening time.....several had fallen in during the course of the activity. Later, the students reported one of their friends missing, but the two older students didn't believe them. About 3 hours later, the supervisors contacted emergency services.......and ultimately found the boy's body in the water.
The article doesn't give the name of the school (at least I couldn't figure it out). When I heard about this story at a new year's eve party, I was under the impression that it was one of the local city schools......but can't determine that from the article.
After the hullabaloo about the school girl's hair fracas a few weeks ago, I thought parents might want to know about this latest incident. As the 16 year old driver in Bangkok said yesterday, "It was an accident, I'm sorry," .....accidents happen.....but judging from how I read this article, there was a lack of adult supervision at a school-sponsored activity.
My apologies for any mistranslations.
