lost sound

Postby old-timer » August 3, 2010, 1:10 pm

I've lost the sound on my laptop. I think I lost it inadvertently whilst clearing disk space. There is an IT guy around here somewhere but he's about as much use as a WFB when it comes to comes to fixing computers.
Ive checked all the basics. Can anyone help ?
Thanks

You have probably just deleted the sound driver OT.
In Windows XP you would go to Control Panel & then go to the Sounds menu & have a look there. I think there is a 'search for hardware' option, if not there then in the 'Add new hardware' menu.
Basically you need to get Windows to find the hardware (if it is 'missing') & then find a suitable driver to run it.
Not too difficult once you are in the right place in windows...

Maybe a silly suggestion but if you've deleted anything maybe it's still in the recycle bin......?

Thanks bob, but I'm still not having much luck. When I go through the control panel to sounds and audio devices it says "No audio devices" which I already knew because I can't hear anything. I'll have to get someone else to sort it out.

It's not there Chriss, I think it's gone for good.

You need to get into Device Manager.

If you have lost your sound driver, you will probably see a yellow triangle with an asterisk alongside "Sound, video and game controllers".

Drill down and see which piece of hardware has the triangle, then double click, click again on the "Driver" box, and click "update driver" (see Billg's comment amount your original installation disc), or if that is unsuccessful, "Roll back driver".

You may then wish to download an updated driver. Take a note of the driver name (eg ATI High Definition Audio Device), and look at either the laptop manufacturer's website for the latest audio driver, or go to the website of the device manufacturer (eg ATI, Realtek, etc) for the latest driver.

You can also try this if the "Drill down" advice in the earlier para does not work.

Do a 'system restore' to a date prior to when you messed it up.

Gone through everything everyone has suggested (thanks) and it's telling me there is no sound driver installed. OT's not the sharpest pencil in the case when it comes to troubleshooting computers so I am going to hand it to an IT expert, which is going to be easier said than done where I am right now.
I'm sure I have discs that came with the laptop, but they are at my place in Udon and I'm in Africa.
thanks.

whats the make and model of your laptop? You may be able to download the sound driver from the manufacturers website.

OT's got his sound back by downloading an updated driver as per Jackspratts' advice, so thanks Jack and thanks to all for your input.

Very strange this, 'cos I've just had the same problem, a red cross on the toolbar speaker icon, yellow triangle on the sound device bit, and a "no sound device installed" message.
I wonder if there's a virus on the loose ?
Luckily I phoned my companies IT man in the UK, he took over control through the "logmein123" site and was able to put some repair program into my laptop and solved the problem in a few mins.

OT has just launched his Viao through the unopened patio doors again because it was driving him mad. So today I picked up a Dell inspiron with windows 7 and put it on the orange 3g network using a dongle. I just watched a couple of you tubes and there was no buffering.
Just to get off subject, OT's going to get wasted tonight, pull a WFB, and puke up as usual.
