No idea about calling the UK, but for LOS I used to use thaitel. Cheapest I found while still living in the US. Choose a plan and pay online, you can also recharge as necessary and keep the same PIN.

You can get some phone cards (forget the names) at some supermarkets in your local chinatown. The phone cards cost about $10 each, the calling rates ranged from 1.5 cent to 15 cents per minute, depending on which country you are calling. You dial a local access number and pay your regular local rate on your cell phone as if you are making a local call. Some phone cards allow you to "speed dial" overseas numbers. The connection quality varies from poor to excellent. You will have to experiment to find out.

I've used this company in the US. Cheap rates and online. No need to go anywhere.

I had Att when I lived in the states. I signed up with ATT for a international calling plan. I was the cheapest I could find. However it is not prepaid.
What I do now. When someone in the states wants to speak with me they send me as SMS. I think the SMS is 25 cents. I call them right back on my True Move sim @ 1 baht for 1 min.
Just a thought.

When in the UK you can perchase a Post Office international phone card. Their prices are competitive and cost £5, £10, & £20.

Skype Unlimited World plan...For The Win! By goodness, I know you must have a Skype capable phone like an Android or iPhone and you are not running around with an ancient touch pad or button phone or the like, right?

The answer to that would appear to be....It depends....Papa.
1. On the make & model of the phone he has.
2. On A T&T.

Here is a list of what it will work on..A special download (free) is needed for some though.

Not sure on if his service provider support it though. In the UK it can only be done through the mobile service supplier 3. If you are not a regular customer of theirs then you can actually still send for a free sim from them just for Skype, or if the phone is wi-fi enabled then you can do free from any wi-fi spot.
The problem (& there is always at least 1, isn't there :D ) is that it is only free for Skype to Skype customers & not sure how many of them there are in Thailand... :D To the UK is certainly a good possibility though..

We were back in the US in November and called back to Thailand every few days using callthai.net calling card. They don't expire, they're rechargeable (so you use the same pin even when you charge up the card), and all bought online easily enough. Clarity was very good whether calling from a mobile or fixed and whether calling to a mobile or fixed.
Less than 1 baht per minute.
