Medical/Emergency Dog Tags

Postby jingjai » August 11, 2010, 2:32 pm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_tags
A dog tag is the informal name for the identification tags worn by military personnel, because of their resemblance to actual dog tags. The tag is primarily used for the identification of dead and wonded along with providing essential basic medical information for the treatment of the latter such as blood type and history of inoculations. Dog tags are usually fabricated from a corrosion-resistant metal or alloy such as aluminum, monel or stainless-steel, although during war-time they have been made from whatever metals were available. In the event the member has a medical condition that requires special attention, an additional red tag with the pertinent information is issued and worn with the dog tags.

I've been thinking that some type of personalized medical emergency/accident dog tags could be life saving for we farangs here in Thailand. Especially if we are alone and have an accident or other type medical emergency.
I've heard quite a few stories of farangs getting into an accident and their wallets are stolen, they're taken unconscious to the hospital, and they don't receive treatment due to the fact the hospital can't verify who they are, if they have insurance, or money to cover the bill. A few people have died.
Remember here in Thailand, hospitals will not treat you, unless they know they will get paid. Even if you have insurance and/or money in the bank, if you are unconscious, and the hospital can not verify insurance or money you are SOL. TIT.

Information could include: Name, Insurance #, emergency contact telephone #'s, etc. Worn around the neck on a cheap chain.

Anyone out there know where one can get personalized dog tags made?

Hi,
Good idea. I'm allergic to a few drugs. I tried wearing a neck chain with all the info on, prefered the wrist band ones. This is just my opinion. and what I prefer. I had to go to Hospital when I broke my wrist in a fall. Told them what I was allergic to. They did not understand me. Showed them the wrist band. They didn't have a clue. Maybe I should have one in Thai.
But a excellent Idea. I think it would also be worth having your blood group on it as well.
Cheers Doug.

Perhaps, one of our local hospitals could source a supplier of the tags, and offer personalized tags to clients as an additional service?

Great idea,I honestly think this would be a good idea for short term holiday visits as well! Not everyone wants to carry a passport around with them to the beach etc...
I think if you could source and buy a metal "press" you could set up market stalls around Thailand

I would have the information written in Thai, otherwise critical information may be misinterpreted. Another thought, if dog tags can't be sourced, is to wear a small thumb drive/memory stick on a chain around your neck with emergency data written in Thai & English.

Similar to this:

Yes mrbeerlao, I also think it could make a good business venture...for someone else.
I'm not that entrepreneurial minded anymore and my wife never has been. However, there are many members of the forum and the community, and their wives, out there that are entrepreneurial minded .

I still think it would be a good idea for a hospital to offer the service.

papaguido, those look great...for a Western country. I don't know whether or not Thailand's emergency medical personnel would even recognize what they are?
I think for Thailand, the simpler, and more cheaper looking (unattractive to thieves), dog tags would be effective.

Perhaps, a ongoing fund raising project for a charitable organization?

There are plenty of sites about offering all kinds of options on tags and similar devices.

I used to wear an SOS Talisman when I wore contact lenses mainly because I was worried about the potential damage to my eyes if the lenses were overlooked in an emergency where I was unconscious.
