Thai authorities ordered six food products temporarily pulled from stores' shelves Thursday pending tests to determine possible contamination with an industrial chemical blamed for sickening tens of thousands of infants and killing at least four.
Chatree Baanchuen, secretary-general of the Food and Drug Administration, said the six products were Mao Huad coffee oatmeal crackers, Oreo wafer sticks, Dove's milk chocolate, M&M's chocolate candies, Snickers candy bars and Mentos yoghurt mix candies.
"The measure is temporary while health officials test if there is melamine contamination," he said, adding that the tests would take about two weeks. It wasn't clear why the six products were singled out.
Several countries have introduced bans on food containing Chinese dairy products after some were found to contain melamine, which has been blamed for sickening more than 54,000 children, four fatally.
On Wednesday, Thailand's FDA had ordered its offices in border provinces, ports and airports to temporarily ban the entry of White Rabbit candies from China, for fear that the edible inner wrapping may contain melamine.
