MILK PRODUCTS IN THAILAND

Postby jingjai » September 25, 2008, 6:13 pm

I received this in the mail today from U.S. Embassy:
September 25, 2008

Over the past several weeks, there have been reports of deaths and
illness in China as a result of milk contaminated with melamine. China
has historically been a supplier of milk and cream products to Thailand,
and on September 22, 2008, rising concern over possibly contaminated
milk led the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to issue a
statement on its website saying that all Chinese dairy imports will be
more stringently inspected. A Thai FDA port inspector confirmed to
Embassy officials that all current shipments of Chinese dairy products
entering Thailand are tested and only released into the market after all
test results are conclusive that the products are not contaminated.

We cannot evaluate the safety of all dairy products available in
Thailand, but suggest that consumers stay abreast of current events and
always look at the product labels for nutritional information, possible
allergens, and country of origin if you are concerned about the source
of your food.

As far as I can tell this contamination in China began solely in regard to powered baby milk going under the Sanlu brand name.
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008- ... 951527.htm
Now it appears to have spread to a large number of dairy products, as the root cause for the addition of melamine into the milk seems to have moved from Sanlu to the two major dairy distributors in China Mengniu Dairy & Yili Industrial Group. Any Chinese dairy product now seems to be under suspicion...

Quoted from the link above:

A Chinese sweet maker has stopped domestic sales of one of its best-known brands after it was found to contain the industrial chemical melamine.
The company, Guanshengyuan, has already halted exports of the popular White Rabbit candy, made from milk.

These White Rabbit sweets are available in Thailand, aren't they? :-k

Thai authorities ordered six food products temporarily pulled from stores' shelves Thursday pending tests to determine possible contamination with an industrial chemical blamed for sickening tens of thousands of infants and killing at least four.

Chatree Baanchuen, secretary-general of the Food and Drug Administration, said the six products were Mao Huad coffee oatmeal crackers, Oreo wafer sticks, Dove's milk chocolate, M&M's chocolate candies, Snickers candy bars and Mentos yoghurt mix candies.

"The measure is temporary while health officials test if there is melamine contamination," he said, adding that the tests would take about two weeks. It wasn't clear why the six products were singled out.

Several countries have introduced bans on food containing Chinese dairy products after some were found to contain melamine, which has been blamed for sickening more than 54,000 children, four fatally.

On Wednesday, Thailand's FDA had ordered its offices in border provinces, ports and airports to temporarily ban the entry of White Rabbit candies from China, for fear that the edible inner wrapping may contain melamine.

If you havn't seen this list of some of the items that have been blacklisted as possibly being tainted, causing illness, from China.

FYI, the following items have been recalled due to China’s milk scandal:

1. M&M
2. Snickers
3. Mento’s Yoghurt Bottle
4. Dove Chocolate
5. Oreo Wafer Sticks
6. Dutchlady Sterilised Milk
7. Wall’s all natural mango
8. Mini Poppers Ice Cream
9. Magnum Ice Cream
10. Moo Sandwich Ice Cream
11. Mini Cornetto
12. Youcan Ice Cream

Stores have been asked by AVA Singapore to remove them. If u have any of
these items at home, recommend you don’t eat them.
